Seoulites at Risk of Tuberculosis Infection
More than 40,000 Koreans living in Seoul came down with tuberculosis (TB) between 2001 and 2004. Rep. Bahk Jae-wan of the opposition Grand National Party (GNP) said Monday that 93.1 of every 100,000 people were reported to have been infected with TB in the capital city during the four-year period, the highest in the nation. Korea had 87 patients for every 100,000 people, the highest rate among the 30 countries of the OECD, Bahk said, citing the World Health Organization (WHO) data. Sweden had the lowest rate with four patients per 100,000 heads, followed by the United States with five, Canada with six, Germany with eight and Finland with nine.

Yeah, sounds high for a country where the floors in any public building are covered in spit and cigarette butts.
Real high.

"Many Seoulites are highly vulnerable to TB due to the high population density of the city, which enables the disease to be easily transmitted to others through cough and sputum," he [Bahk Jae-wan] said.

Someon I know here got it. She was teacing at a scholl and "had to take a break". They put her up (they being friends, not the school) in an Apt. and helped her with medical aid.
She couldn't even go "back home" because they wouldn't let her on a plane. |

actually, i've known about the preponderance of TB in korea for a long time but it's weird, the stats are there for anyone to see with just a bit of internet diving, i think the WHO website has the most about it, but no one among the many many koreans i ever asked ever had the slightest clue about about how much TB there is there. same thing with hepatitis and divorce.
god i'm glad i'm back in canada where there aren't a million yellow ajossi loogies obstacles to deal with everyday. |

Koreans simply need to change their habits in accordance. If it wasn't for the fact that so many Korean men spit everywhere, TB might not be a problem at all.
Another step to take would be for the Korean government to give out fines to hospitals who do not maintain proper hygienic conditions. Many of the hospitals I've visited in Korea were far too dirty. A lot of their equipment, such as hospital bed frames, are in dire need of a good cleaning.
Many hospitals also need to keep fewer patients per room. Is it acceptable to keep 10-12 sick kids in a room? When you factor in the number of mothers and grandmothers who are watching over their child's bedside, the number of people comes close to 30 in a single 12-15 pyong room. |

when i was visiting the Mutter Museum in philadelphia (museum of medical oddities, weirdest museum on the planet) on a holiday away from korea a couple of years back, there were some turn of the last century anti-TB posters on display, circa 1900. they were pretty cool! anyway, the government-issued propaganda was mostly targeted at stopping the practice of public spitting. as i gazed upon those amusing historical relics more than 100 years after they were circulated, i couldn't help but wonder why korea has never embarked upon a similar 'stamp out spitting cos stamping in spit spreads TB' campaign... |
