Just want to let you know;
I have been told that local body elections are being held this year on Wednesday May 31st. Government schools will be shut, so foreign teachers should have the day off.
I'm not sure what effect it will have on private hagwons, as I was told it was a 'temporary' holiday, as opposed to an 'official' holiday.
(As with everything on Dave's, you should check this out with other sources.)
Anyone else heard anything along these lines? |

| Yes, I have my middle school's schedule for the year and we have that day off. I guess it makes up for not getting Arbor Day this year... |

| yep, it's a holiday for public school teachers. not as good as the one week holiday I get in the beginning of May tho. |

local body? does that mean seoul and gyeonggi only?
or all local bodies everywhere in the country?
(sometimes some posters equate seoul with korea) |

Van Islander; ha, I get really annoyed when the majority of posters equate Seoul/Gyeonggi-do with Korea. (Sure, I'll just pop into Itaewon at the weekend  ) I am in deepest darkest Jeollabuk-do. As far as I know the 'local body' part refers to all provinces. That's part of the reason why I posted, to let others in more out-of-the-way areas know what's going on.
And as I never get told anything in advance, and am always the last to know, I got such a shock at actually finding out about something, that I just had to post about it, even though it's not happening for another two months.
It's never too early to find out about a holiday! |

Dang! I just hate it when an official holiday falls on the weekend and we
have to forfeit it, unlike in Canada where it is made up on the following
Monday. But then, we Cannucks are far more civilized when it's a question
of labour and civil priviliges. I am going to reread my contract concerning
having 15 national holidays a year. Perhaps the wording in the Korean
translation entitles me to have a make-up day when a holiday falls on the
weekend.  |
