Magic act puts Snopes on the hot seat!
Can they uphold their truthseeking and truthtelling reputation without risking a Job-esque boycott by the Magician's Union?
And how the heck did that guy do that?

Claim: Video clip shows a man walking through a solid glass window.
Status: Multiple — see below.
* The man shown walking through the window is magician Criss Angel, and this clip was taken from his Mindfreak television program, which airs on the A&E cable channel.
* The illusion he performs is not dependent upon video manipulation or trickery — it's executed as shown, and it was captured in one continuous take, without edits or inserts.
* He does not actually walk through a solid glass window; he's performing what is commonly known as a "magic trick."
More than that we cannot say without running afoul of the magician's code, other than to note that information about how this type of illusion is performed is readily available to those willing to expend the effort to look for it.

Well, I'm willing to expend the effort to post here and ask other people to expend the effort to look for it- shouldn't that count for something? |

It's NOT a trick; it's an illusion.
Tricks are something prostitutes do for money. |

Many years ago I was at a David Copperfield show in Abilene, Texas. My girlfriend had really good seats--like the third row in an orchestra style auditorium.
When we sat down I noticed an X laid out on the floor directly in front of my seat with black electrical tape. I immediately suspected something was up and switched places with my girlfriend's six-year-old son.
Well, I was right. The final illusion was a glass container suspended from the ceiling with David in it. Suddenly curtains were drawn around it. Next, the curtains fell and David was nowhere to be seen and the glass container had a tiger in it.
At just that moment, when everyone was glued with amazement to the scene, David does this amazing squat-waddle down our isle and...flash--the spotlight shines on the X-marked spot chair. David stands up on the arm rests; the crowd goes wild. |

| Why does he take his boots off? You'll notice his confederate goes into the office first, the magician follows but at the last second pops back out to take his boots off. The camera and the audience focus on him taking his boots off. The confederate sets up the trick in the office. The film is sped up but it's pretty clear he's taking a lot of time to remove his boots. |

| to make you focus on the boots. I haven;t watched the tape to see the technique, but the number one tool in a magican's toolbox is misdirection. |

Ah the Balducci levitation. David Blaine used this quite dishonorably during one of his street magic shows. The trick is pretty easy to figure out. You lift your left foot off the ground and then stand on your tippy toes on the other foot. If you do it at the right angle, it looks like you've levitated. However, it's very easy for your brain to quickly see the amount you levitate is about what you'd rise by standing on your tippy toes. Anyway, during the show, he did the trick but then from another angle they edited in him doing it in a studio being pulled up by wires.
You saw both "real" street magic and an edited studio FX shot. Cheap. Some people don't like Blaine because some view him as being dishonest. First, he tries to pass of an FX shot as magic. And then when the Cult of Blaine started proclaiming him the new messiah, he really didn't exactly go out of his way to state "I'm an illusionist. I'm not the second coming..." |

Criss Angel was on the Penn Jillette radio show and I thought of this thread. Criss Angel is a clever illusionist but for some reason there are people who are trying to claim he actually has powers. Criss Angel denies he's doing anything other than clever illusions... but some people need to believe. (He notes if he really had magical powers, he wouldn't be lighting himself on fire. He'd be working with scientist to lock up the Nobel prize and using them to cure cancer or fight terrorism. Penn, who is working in Vegas, likes to note why are there so many psychics working in Vegas, working in little strip mall shops when they're a block away from a slot machine with a million dollar pay out?)
Here's a great video showing how he does a levitation trick. It's so simple, yet deadly clever.

As Jillette notes you can show a person how a trick is done but few people can actually do it. That's where the real skill comes in. Being able to move your body and misdirect people. Would you be able to really pull off the levitation trick if you had his pair of pants? |

Just a guess, but I think the people there were in on it. And really bad actors at that.
My guess is, the window was hinged at the top. And it was simply swung open at the bottom. This is why the camera showed only a direct head on shot, so that this would not be detectable.

I thought the window had been slid up and that he was holding up a plate of glass against the paper when he told the guy to touch the window through it.
You probably got it right. That would have allowed him more space to move than simply lifting the window vertically. Poking his finger through the paper would have created enough of a diversion to pull it off.
The guy on the inside of the office was a terrible actor, by the way. They didn't time his reaction all too well. It would have been more believable if they had given him a couple of seconds before getting him in a shot. |
