|

Hello everyone,
I was just wondering if there are jobs that start in July or August or do they generally only start in March and September of every year?
Cheers! |

| I think you can get a job at a hogwan (private language school) at any time of the year you want. |

With hakwons you can get jobs all year round.
Public schools and universities do most of their hiring for the begining of the school year (march). |

Yes, you did. But that doesn't really help the OP. It is possible to get jobs super early, even if they're not advertising. Maybe the OP could email some employers asking for July/August - you never know. |

For Hagwons, there are good and bad times.
If you teach English conversation, probably before the summer and winter breaks are best (before mid July and before end of December, respectively) since a lot of Hagwons will have more volume of students that they need teachers for during those periods.
If you teach English literature/reading and writing or anything applicable to real Korean English subjects or for general student English progress, before March is big (beginning of the school year) and just before mid term examinations when many students will be out of hagwons but will return afterwards (mid April and mid October). And, the times I mentioned above too.
The other poster was right about Hagwons hiring all year round, but you could make the best deals and get yourself negotiated into the most hours since they will be in the class planning stage at that point. If you can show your ability and show a little more than the average EFLer, you could maybe get more hours (if paid by the hour) or more bonuses or higher salary (if salary), or more advanced classes as opposed to you getting what they have left over (the class from hell that everyone DOESN'T want and had quit to avoid).
Hope that helps! |

Actually it would help the OP to know when the better Uni and P-school jobs open up.....
He could of course send in his application now and see what happens. There are a few openings for september starts but the better positions start in march and recruiting for those begins mostly in november.
By all means OP..apply now.
Note that Hakwons recruit all year long too.
Note also that to teach university you mostly need experience here (or an equivalent) and/or a M.A. |

Of course would you want your first introduction to Korea to be in summer? Depending where you come from and where you're moving to in Korea but wow the stress of having to deal with hagwon kids for the first time, figure everything out, pollution, and the heat... *head spins*
My own tastes, coming in fall is better. 1) the weather is better 2) you can wear your coat on the plane and mail your lightweight summer clothes to your school, thereby saving luggage space. |

| Wow, thanks everyone for your responses. I definitely don't want to wait until next March and don't even really want to wait until September but I suppose I could. I don't mind teaching in a Hogwan but I'd prefer to work with older kids, maybe junior high or high school. I only have a bachelor's and not very much teaching experience so I don't think I'd be able to teach at the uni level. |

| It's hard to find qualified teachers at foreign language high schools so a lot of them are in a never ending state of hiring. You could try them. |

| Public school jobs often start in late August. Our (mostly adult students) hagwon has an opening in August, PM if you're interested. |
