I'm not going to post my whole contract up here, as I'm pretty happy with it all. However, one small item needs clearing up for me. The start date on the contract is not when I am able to start, it's a couple of weeks too early. I explained this to the recruiter, but he keeps telling me that it's no problem, says just sign it and send it and all will be ok. I'm holding back until I speak to someone from the school itself (should be later today or tomorrow), but just wanted some opinions. If I sign a contract saying employment will start on 17 April, then don't actually start until May 1st (this is my earliest starting date - I have reinforced this to my recruiter numerous times) then am I likely to be penalised in any way, or suffer any problems as a result of this?

I'm no expert, but it sounds to me like there could be trouble at the end of the contract. For one thing, you have to work a year to be entitled to severance pay. You will be short 10 or so working days.

The day you start working is the start date of the contract. End of story. Tell your recruiter that the date needs to be changed to the appropriate one. I guess you could change it yourself and then sign it, but this should all be run by the haggie boss and all.

Yes, good point. Make sure you change the dates somehow, please don't risk losing out on your bonus payment or having to work extra days unexpectedly - don't sign until you have the dates you want.
