i'm just wondering what the going rate for private korean lessons is. i'm about to start classes and the girl wants 25,000 per student, so it's 50,000/hour. is that reasonable?

I wouldnt pay more than 20!!

I mean come on!! 50!!! this is korea, there are 50million people here!
sure learning English it will cost you more! becuase frankly there are not many natives here to learn from and you are not in USA!!

But koreans seem to think well if it costs 30-50 to study English then I am going to charge the same! and that is just wrong
and no you tell her its not 25.000 per student!! you tell her its 30.000 an hour! and if I have 2 or 4 students it doesnt change anything.! its a discount for us! thats why we are bringing in more students to SAVE MONEY! koreans always try to charge per person! if thats the case!
then tell her fine! 25.000 per person! per hour! we will take 2 hours
one per hour! see how she likes them apples!?
so you tell her 30.000 for the hour! and two students spliting the bill or no dice! you can get better rates at a hakwon... tell her you have plenty of other people willing to teach after all this is korea.. and the job economy is not good these days!
so I wouldnt pay more than 30.000 an hour! per class! no student!
why?? becuase you can easily find someone who will teach you for that!
50.000 an hour to learn korea!! NOWAY!!
25.000 per student??? get 3 guys and she makes 75.000 an hour!!!
NOWAY!!!!! dont let her use you.. bring her back to reality!!
who makes 75 dollars an hour??? tell her she is dreaming!!

35 but my tutor majored in Korean language teaching and has two years experience.

Anyone else I'd be inclined to agree with IG.

I used to pay about 20 an hour.

She was nice, and tried hard, but she had no qualifications. She could do it for 20, or earn 3,000 an hour at a bakery or coffee shop. She chose to take 20.

Shit the girl in Busan charges 17k and that for privates.. 25 is overboard.

I pay 150K for One month of classes. 3 Times a week for 2 hours. I think thats like 6.24 per hour.

She is also an excelent teacher not just some random Korean of the street. She speaks english and Japanese.

Laughing
During my breaks I sit-in on the Korean Teachers' basic English classes. It's sweet because they are trying to explain English to the students by making comparisons to Han-gul and they pause to explain things to me in English. I don't feel like I'm imposing because they seem so stoked to be teaching me Korean. Best part, it's free.

Why not enroll at a university?

Some offer flexible hours for Korean language programs.

Also, check out the YMCA (I took lessons there for a year).

My tutor studied Languages and European Studies at Yonsei, is a qualified language instructor and just got picked up by the Yonsei language school( but will continues her lessons with me). And I pay 25,000 an hour for two two hour sessions per week. 400K a month. Totally worth it, although I would prefer she use the Seogang Book--she has experience with the SNU one, which is nowhere near as good.

Cheers.

Have to agree with the others...it is all about supply and demand..

25 000 won an hour is way too much if she is unskilled.
