This might be the drop of a stone that will cause an avalanche. |

If Google doesn't do China, then somebody will do it. |

Propaganda!
I'll bet the U.S. gov hacks into Google (or maybe Google allows them in) and spies on U.S. dissidents everyday, but Google doesn't say anything.
I also highly doubt that it's only the Chinese trying to hack into Google to spy on people.
I wonder what kind of game the U.S. is playing here with China? |

Google doesn't complain about the US hacking into them because the USA is not hacking into them. If the Government was hacking, Google would take the government to court. Something that can't be done in China. |

Google probably gives in to the U.S. gov's demands for access anyway. Plus, The Patriot Act might give the gov access to emails in addition to the ability to listen in on phone calls. |

There is a different between monitoring email between terrorists who want to kill innocent civilians
and monitoring civilians because the Chinese Government will not:
- help them prosecute the the local Government approved builders and suppliers of poorly constructed schools that collapsed during the massive Chinese earthquake.
- help them receive fair compensation from local Government officials who stole their farm land to build an apartment building or factory. members.
- help them stop the water pollution being dumped by a chemical factory protected by a local Government official.
- help them stop being harassed because they are a minority group whose culture, language, and way of life is being destroyed by migrating Han Chinese.
- help them find out what happened to a son, daughter, mother, or husband who was "picked up" by the police. |

While it's great that you're listing these abuses China is up to, you must not forget that all the western countries that run to China for cheap manufacturing should be seen as guilty accomplices as well. Financially supporting a country that has little respect for human rights and the environment. If the western powers really cared about these things too, it would take its business to countries that have better performance records (or who are at least more willing to change undesireable existing ones). |
