Okay I have two very different questions. Any and all information on either or both would be greatly appreciated Smile

1)If I wanted to get out of Seoul for the weekend and head toward a beach, where should I head to? I figure Incheon is probably the closest, and easiest to get to (I can get there by subway.. yes?). I was hoping maybe someone who lives either in Seoul or Incheon could tell me what subway line to take, and what stop would take me to a beach once I'm in Incheon (exit too maybe if you're feeling particularly kind).

and unrelated question #2

I've seen some advertisements for some pretty big concerts here in Seoul. Just curious if anyone knows whether you have to buy your tickets in advance, or if scalpers outside the venue are a common thing here? I bought tickets to a basketball game this way (a lady standing by a ticket booth) and only realized it was a scalper when someone else went to another booth to buy a ticket (I should have known by the plastic barrier in the booth that it was the legit place to buy a ticket). Anyway, I know it's a risk, but is it possible?
Thanks again!

I did that one year at the height of the season... and actually had a good time! I don't know if it looks worse than it is, or if we were just lucky... but once you found a spot on the beach (again not as difficult as the pictures would have you believe) the water was relatively uncrowded because the masses tend to huddle at waist deep position about 3 metres from shore. Go out another few metres to neck deep and you have the waves practically to yourself.

But of course that's Busan, not Incheon.

I recommend that the OP plan to go to one of the islands, which will mean getting off at either Tong inchon or Inchon (end of the line) station, depending on what beaches you plan to go to (and what ferries you will take there).

Check out the 'tour incheon' -> 'island tour'.

Wow - that definitely doesn't look like the beaches back home!

I was hoping maybe this weekend, or next weekend for the beach (weather permitting). Maybe I'll be a bit ahead of the crowds if I go now rather than in the middle of the summer heat.

Thanks for the link to the islands, I'll definitely check that out.

Does anyone know anything about the concerts?

Yes, it's funny... beaches will be completely empty until the "summer" which means about 3 weeks it's crazy. After "summer" the crowds will go. I mean how can you go to the beach when it's so cold outside? I don't know how those strange foreigners do it.

Try Jebudo. From what I understand you can get there if you take the blue subway line down to Oido.

Best beaches? South coast. I reccomend Nam hae or Kojedo.

Great tip jinju. What Seoul subway station do you get off at to go swimming for the afternoon on Geoje island?

Hehe-- I took that picture of Haeundae beach, in August 2003.

You could try Daechon beach. Go to Cheonan and then take a westbound train. It might be more than a day trip, but it's a nice beach in summer.

Thanks for the tips so far guys! I would really like to head to a beach before "beach season" hits. I'm new to Korea so the specific directions definitely help me out a lot!

The picture is pretty...intense. I hope to head there before it becomes like that. At home, you go to a beach at "high season" and you can still see sand. Go in low season, you're lucky to see another person for miles.

I'll ask again about the concerts though. My boyfriend is looking at some of the bigger names and wants to know about the scalpers. With us both being new here, reading Korean is not a forte yet, so purchasing online can be difficult. Does anyone know if it is possible?

Thanks so far for the help. Smile

From Seoul, the two closest beaches to you for a day trip are Eulwangni beach (ո ؼ) on Yeongjeongdo and the two beaches on Muuido (ǵ). Hanagye beach (ϳ) is the nicer beach on Muuido. You can reach either one by airport bus.

If you want to take an overnight trip, then there are two islands in the Yellow Sea I recommend, either Jawoldo/ڿ or Deokjeokdo/. You can get to them by ferry from Yeonan Ferry Terminal (Ⱥε), which is about a 5000 won cab ride from Dong Incheon subway station, or via Samhwa Express bus from Shinchon, Gangnam, or Seoul Station.

Round trip ferry tickets to either will cost you around W30,000. Minbak rooms with kitchen facilities should be available from W30,000-40,000. There are plenty of Korean restaurants on the island, if you want any Western food you'll have to bring it with you. During peak season (July-
August) these islands can get a bit crowded and minbaks can be more expensive, but nothing like the picture of Haeundae Beach above. During off-peak season, these islands and their beaches are wonderfully deserted.
