Ever heard of one of these?
New teacher at my school, and I find him harder to understand than the Korean teachers. His English is quite bad, and his spelling and writing are atrocious. I asked him if he was born in the U.S. because he doesn't have any accent, and he said, "Yes, I'm from Orange County."
Something smells fishy. My Korean supervisor said his American/ Korean girlfriend did all the talking at the interview as well.
He's the only other foreigner at my school, and the fact that he doesn't understand wat he's doing makes my job harder.
Thoughts?

Did they find someone who graduated from the University of Disneyland with a major in roller coaster riding or the University of Surf City with a major in hanging ten?
I feel sorry for you. |

Nice use of sarcasm.
I'm not overly bothered by it, but It would be nice to have a teacher to talk to at school instead of someone that you cant understand and have to over-simplify when explaining things to.
I don't think he has a good enough command of English to be teaching. I'm thinking of the students here as well.
Example he wrote: "more better" in a report for one of the kids. The parents know enough English to see that doesn't work.
Consider the fact that he wont answer the question honestly on where he is from. |

I truely do feel for you. Your hakwon was desperate and grabbed the first turnip to fall off the truck before it got away.
The good news is that he will probably only stay for 30-90 days (depending whether he as a 30 day stamp or 90 day tourist visa) assuming he really is from the states.
Fear not, it will get "more better" eventually.
Have you considered jumping to a real school instead of a "lets pimp our foreigner for profit" academy yet? |

I've never heard anyone say "I'm from Orange County."
It's always, "I'm from California." or "I'm from Los Angeles."
He's probably an immigrant. |

I'm with English_Ocean, although it's possible that with the advent of that awful TV show someone might think that's the way to identify where they're from.
Aside: there actually is a "Disney University," that's where cast members (employees) go to get training before they begin performing (working). You even get a little diploma upon completion. |

If they did that they deserve exactly what they are getting.
Have you brought the issue up with your boss? |

No one in the US EVER identifies themself by their county. That's actually the name of a TV show.
Ced- you've probably got an illegal teacher there. Ask this person where they went to college. Betcha they come up with more BS.
Oh, and my co-workers have been pretty much useless backstabbers- at both hogwans. Expect the same from your new co-worker. |

Oh, and there's no such thing as an "American Accent"- it's the rest of y'all that talks funny. |

Almost never. People from NYC do. And Orange County is rather infamous. Ask him what he thinks about Orange County. If he's proud to be from there, bust him. If he's apologetic, cut him some slack. |

NYC? Boroughs- not counties
Oh, and there are cities in Orange county, too. Maybe you could bluff something out of him. Ask him if he's from the east side or west side.
If he was a little older he'd probably tell you he's from "90120" |

I don't want to sound like an idiot, but there are a number of Orange counties, the first being in North Carolina and another being in California.
I've never heard of an American accent myself, there are regional accents. Like many of you've said previously, not many people mention the county they are from. It seems rather odd to me if someone said that when identifying where they are from since many people only know down to the city level, if that. |
