Just a thought.
I think it always helps to negotiate.
Lets face it good teachers are in high demand, just look at the amount of schools hiring, therefore it never hurts to ask for more.
I am not saying you have to go overboard or anything but if you dont ask for more money they will not give it to you.

Hopefully other teachers can provide examples.

I was offered 2.2, I simply asked for 2.3 and they gave it to me. That is worth about $1,200 USD and I earned it just by asking for it.
Maybe I should have asked for 2.5. Later they offered some overtime work, they offered $24 a hour, I asked for $28 and I got it.

Like I said, it would be interesting to see some examples of contracts negotiated, I am sure a lot of teachers have done a much better job at it than me.

By all means, if you have the references and qualifications to back it up..negociate!

The system is set up for it.

Just make sure you have what it takes to back up your demands...and remember negociations are give and take...not just demand and pout. Laughing

Or, instead of more money, ask for days off.

For example, the first Friday off every month. I've thrown that out there and been amazed that about half of inquiries have agreed.

I held out until I got every Friday and Saturday off. For 2.2 plus a two-bedroom apartment. That's a three-day weekend every week plus no mornings.

That's an extra 52 days a year off.

How could I turn that down? Shocked

Is it concievable to have preplanned days off put in the contract? Say like you have a wedding to go to 7 months into your contract and it's half way around the world. Could you ask for maybe 5 or 6 days from your vacation time?

There's nothing worse than finding out that your co-worker has got a better deal than you because they were more of a hardball negotiator.

I remember being very bitter when I found out that my coworker had managed to land a block-shift when I was stuck on splits. I vowed to be a hard-arse from then on.

Don't take "no" for an answer when negotiating. BE PREPARED TO WALK AWAY. If they call you back, you've won. If they don't call you back, then there are plenty of better jobs out there. It's also good to play one school off against the other, especially if they're different branches of the same company.

And avoid Direct English like the plague; Never negotiate with terrorists.

Has anyone ever negotiated that severance by paid in monthly installments month by ongong month? So instead of waiting for the big carrot at the end the carrot is cut up into little, month by month, bites. I can't stand the severance carrot. Anyone negotiated around it like this?

Please...Some jobs are just too good to pass up. You have to know where you stand in the situation. If you got a kick ass offer, how much would you hate yourself for losing it because you were a greedy little shit that wanted an extra 25,000 won a week?

Well, obviously.

Well it was too good a play on words to pass up, but the sentiment is correct; it's a pretty terror-ble place to work for. I'm well-shot of those evil, incompetent morons.
