Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings: 300 pts.
Who are the authors of both HP and LOTR? Rowling and Tolkien.
They just love these books/movies. I also teach author and work on the pronunciation of Harry Potter as opposed to 츮 and the tendency to de-pluralize English phrases commonly used in Korean when they use them in English. I.e., McDonald's, Lord of the Rings, etc.
On this note, one of my higher level classes said that I was simply teaching the American pronunciation of "Potter" which sounds like "Pah-ter" or "Pahder" really, whereas the "Konglish" pronunciation just follows the proper Britlish. Yet, when I play the actors' versions in my head, or attempt a poor English accent myself it seems to me that the "Poh-ter" still has too much "oh" to it and our friends from across the pond pronounce it closer to "Puh-ter" or "Pah-ter" but a bit softer on the "ah" then a Midwestern or Northeastern U.S. accent. Input requested and very welcome. |
Can any Brits help me out with this? Aussies, Kiwis and South Africans(is there a cute nickname for you guys too?) are all welcome to offer their two cents/tuppence/kroners/what the hell ever.
Newfs need not apply.
Cheers. |

Are you American with a Midwestern or Northeastern U.S. accent? If you are than say it how you say it. It really annoys me when someone says "you're only teaching the U.S. pronunciation." Guess what, I'm American. And, before someone gets a bug up their behind about me acting superior, let me just put in that I don't think my pronunciation is better than one of the other aforementioned ones. It just is what it is. If the school wants only British, Aussie or Kiwi pronunciation they should have hired one. Chances are, even if I fake it I'll screw it up, since I haven't spent the last 26 years learning it that way, so why bother.
My idea of a British accent would be imitating James Bond, and Connery is Scottish and Brosnan is Irish (those are the only two Bonds I like). If the higher level students are that bothered by it, let them find a Brit teacher. It really is nonsense, all this nitpicking over "the right" pronunciation. Just talk like you talk, man.

Uhhh..thanks.
But that wasn't what I was getting at. I am not going to change my pronunciation just to please the kiddies or more accurately reflect the teachers at Hogwarts, I'm just interested in discovering if there is any truth to what the kids are saying about the similarity between the Korean and English pronunciations. For example the Korean pronunciation of "Zeus" is closer to the Greek than the English pronunciation is.
But if my post allowed you to vent some steam, great. |

i also often namedrop harry potter, LOTR, and mickey d's during accent reduction exercises.
i've definitely noticed that the korean language more carefully preserves the pronunciation of words from other languages, whereas we in the west really bastardize, taking liberties with stress placement, reducing vowels to schwa, et cetera.
that said, though, i don't think you need to worry about scapping your lesson or anything so dire. when students say "츮" they're not using british english, they're just relying too much on the limited hangeul system -- as always -- which really prevents them from picking up the accurate pronunciation of other languages.

That's what I thought as well: there is no equivalent phoneme (and thus no representative letter/syllable grouping) in Korean for the "a" in Harry and the "o" in Potter is a little bit off Hangeul as well.
But, in all good fun, why the hell does everybody think I am going to scrap my lesson or change my pronunciation? Are other teachers that harassed by their little bstards that I have struck some chord whose presence I was unaware of?
And I am still looking for a Brit to weigh in on how they would pronounce the scarred jock's name. |

or attempt a poor English accent myself |
Oh, I get it now. I don't do this in class--just to myself. To see how it sounds.
Don't worry, faithful to my ̱ roots. |
