Hello, I'm trying to decide between going to the FujiRock festival, or the Summersonic festival, this summer. Ultimately, the decision will probably be based on the line-up, but I was just wondering if anyone had been to either of them in the past, and how much they would recommend them. Thanks for your input!

summersonic is looking extremely commercial this year. Metallica, Linkin Park etc.

Fuji has a much more ecletic underground line-up.

I'm assuming these aren't being held in Korea...what are the dates and locations?

I thought Summersonic was usually in Fukuoka but it appears to be in Osaka this year...last weekend of July.

Fuji Festival is first weeked of August...outside of Tokyo.

Both are huge festivals with camping along the lines of the European festivals (Glastonbury, Reading etc.)

Word up...I have the last two weeks of July and most of August off for summer break, so I can definitely plan on checking those out.

Yup, stuff like Metallica and Linkin Park is depressing to see in the line-up, but Massive Attack, Tool and 65 Days Of Static would be good. Can't say that the Fuji bill seems very "underground" so far, but it's certainly more interesting! And has my compatriots, the mighty Mogwai! Has it's fair share of shite as well though...Kula Shaker? KT Tunstall?? Jet??? AAArgh! It's a fair amount of Won to exchange, but it's summer tradition to hit a festival, well, certainly a UK tradition anyway. I guess Fuji leads the race so far!

It looks like the festival grounds for Fuji Rock Festival are about 1.5 hours from Tokyo by train. I remember those trains being NOT CHEAP. However, there appears to be some tour groups running transportation up to the festival site also.

Currently, it appears impossible to buy tickets from outside of Japan but they're supposed to have an update on their site soon.

I went to Fuji Rock Festival a few years ago when I lived in Japan. Is it still being held at Yuzawa? If so, then the setting is really cool, as in the winter the festival ground is a skifield. You can camp there as well or stay at accommodation (prices will be hiked I guess) in the town.

As for trains, if you are only planning on going to the festival and perhaps travelling around/through Tokyo, then get the JR East 4-day pass. It is different to the JR Rail Pass, more flexible and cheaper.
You don't have to use it on consecutive days, just on any four days in a certain time period. This is really handy. Also a lot of the time the station people don't bother to stamp the pass, which means you might score an extra travelling day out of it!
You also don't have to buy it out of Japan - the last time I got one was at the JR office at Narita Airport.

I'd definitely go with the Fuji Rock Festival, but then again I have no idea what your musical tastes are.

I've been told that when all is said and done, you can expect to spend about $1000 US if you are going to go to FRF.

Location: Naeba Ski Resort, Yuzawa-machi, Niigata, Japan

Date: Fri July 28 --> Sun July 30

English website: http://www.smash-uk.com/frf06/index.html

I'd love to go.. But its too damn expensive!
