I'm in need of another hard drive for storing digital video, picutres, and music. Any known issues/drawbacks with either of these models:
Seagate S-ATA 250G 7200rpm (250 GB)
Samsung S-ATA 250G 7200rpm (250 GB)
I've found both on line for around 90,000. Should I spend the extra 20,000 and go up to 300 GB model?
Thoughts? |

From those two I would take Seagate, because they make pretty decent hard drives. The drives you are looking at are about the same when it comes to noise (both are silent) and speed (not the fastest out there).
But here's the deal breaker for me: Seagate has a 5 year warranty while Samsung has "only" 3 years. You have to remember that this extra warranty doesn't make the drive any more reliable, though!
About the extra 50 gig... well, do you need it? If you do, then get it.
But what ever you do, do stay away from Maxtor hard drives! Maybe the new line is good, but some of the older stuff was something else!
EDIT: If you need more info try THIS SITE. |

Thanks for the info. In the back of my mind, I thought I remembered hearing good things about Seagate drives.
Cheers! |

For better speed, I would encourage you to look at the drives with a 16 meg cache. Those are going to have the best speed for drives near this price range. You will spend a bit more, although I consider it a worthwhile choice. |

The samsung drives are really quiet but are slow compared. I bought a 320 WD KJS drive with 16 meg cache its one of the fastest drives that are non 10k rpm. It was 145k. |

Thanks again for the feedback. I was looking at the 16 MB cache / buffer jobbies, but not sure if I need it. I'm planning on using it for storage more than anything. Everything will be backed up on CD, but it's nice to have it accessible, if it's needed.
I'm not sure if I'll need the 16 MB...after all, anything's gonna be an improvement on my current hard drive (Samsung SV6003H60G 5400RPM ATA100 2MB CACHE) Of course, as I'll be storing digial video files, a faster hard drive might not be a bad idea...
Yet more food for thought... |

I was in the same boat as you, but planning to store movies. Any 7200 RPM drive will fit your bill. What I ended up doing was putting my new drive in my computer after removing the old one. I reinstalled windows on the new HD, put the old drive in a USB external box, and now have a faster computer. I use the older drive for my basic storage.
A nice, clean install of windows on a faster HD, and all of my programs reinstalled really speeded things up nicely. It took about 4 hours to reinstall everything, but it was very much worth it! |

If I get two SATA HDD's, probably 250gb each, whats the chances my current PSU connectors will work?
What if my PSU only uses 4 pin Molex power connectors? Can I just use adaptors? |

Buy any of the Seagate Baracuda drives which are 7200.9 NCQ (Ultra ATA), with capacities of up to 500gb. These are the fastest and the most forward compatible on the market right now and come from a company with a solid history of reliability. You can see a review here. |
