Hey hockey fans...
I was wondering how you would rank the Canadian teams now that most of the free agents have been signed.
Here is my take:
Edmonton Oilers
I would say this is the most improved team with the acquisition of Pronger and Peca. They should be in the thick of it this year.
Calgary Flames
They made key moves to keep their team up and running.
Vancouver Canucks
Resigned key elements so far. They will be good.
Ottawa Senators
Dropped the ball on Lapointed and still lack toughness and the goalie question is far from solid.
Montreal Canadians
Re-signed Kovalev (excellent) and got Dandenaut while tossing Brisebois out. They look solid.
Toronto Maple Leafs
They missed the train, the boat and the cab here. They are now stuck signing second tier players or has beens. They are even considering getting Lindros!
My ranking
1- Vancouver Canucks
2- Ottawa Senators ( unless Hasek collapses)
3- Calgary Flames
4- Montreal Canadians
5- Edmonton Oilers
6- Toronto Maple Leafs (unless they pull several rabbits out of their hat) |

1 - Calgary
2 - Ottawa
3 - Vancouver
4 - Montreal
5 - Edmonton
6 - Toronto
And that 6th place ranking has nothing to do with the fact that I despise the Leafs... I truly believe that they will be the worst Canadian team this year.. |

Leafs have signed both Lindros and Allison. They share a history of concussion problems. One more big hit and they could be done. |

Some commentary from HNIC this October:
Bob: And there goes the pass from McCabe, to Lindros, across centre, over the blue line, Watch out!! Look out! Oh, what a check by Hatcher!! Lindros is down, Harry.
Harry: Yeah Bob, I see that I'm old but not blind. Looks like 88 is in some trouble with those 300 concussions he's had. Here comes the Leafs medical staff.
Bob: We'll be right back.
<insert Canadian Tire commercial here >
Bob: We're back, looks like they are bringing out a strecher and taking Eric to the hospital.
Harry: Bob that was just like the Hit he took in Philly a couple years ago from Scott Stevens which was almost a career ender.
Bob: This sux, I have to wait yet another year to retire since the leafs chances for a Cup are gone again.
Harry: What the heck, lets have a parade anyway. |

I sort of agree with your lineup Homer but I would put the
HAMILTON TIGER CATS FIRST If those guys could skate their Defense would be awesome
Unfortunately I havent followed hockey all that much these last 3 years...no games to watch where I was living. |

well, IF and thats a BIG "if", lindros and allison and o'neill (who no one above mentioned) stay healthy and keep their heads up, they may do alright. o'neill is just as good a score as lindros OR allison. all 3 had big years with their old teams. it'll be interesting. but i hate toronto, so who cares!
everyone puts down and jokes about lindros, but didn't anyone see how he played in junior and his first major years in the nhl? he was a monster! hit, fight, score, hart trophy etc... geez.. the guy hit everything except the ads on the boards! however, that lead to his downfall. also when he first came into the league, there was almost like a bounty on his head with every tough guy and team trying to take him out. if crosby had to put up with that, which he WON'T coz of the difference in the league now, crosby would flop faster then alexandre daigle!! |

the leafs are predicted for doom and gloom at the start of every season, so i'm not too worried now.
does anyone remember that lindros was playing some of the best hockey of his career before doig gave him the shoulder injury?
or how allison, when healthy, is a top-5 player in the league?
how about the fact that o'neill has averaged about 30 goals a season (in his prime) with no linemates on just about the worst team in the nhl? he had an off-year last season, but put him with mats and he should regain his form.
the core of our defence is still there. these are the same guys who brought us to within a point of winning the conference last season.
belfour's had a wonky back ever since his career began, yet he still manages to hammer out 60 games a year.
you could say "if eddie doesn't have a good year, then the leafs are going nowhere" but really, couldn't you say that about any goalie on any team? if hasek falters, then ottawa's done for. same goes for kipper in calgary and those two no-names in edmonton.
belfour and hasek are both 40 but eddie's a positional goaltender who relies more on his wits than his athleticism. on the other hand, hasek's a reflex goalie (ie. youth is the key) who hasn't played in 2 years. really, who would you rather have?
people's unwavering hate for the leafs always shines through with their stupid predictions. i'm not even gonna rank the canadian clubs as of now because my homerism would skew the results. but i assure anyone here that toronto will make the playoffs and won't be the worst of the canadian bunch. |

My favorite teams of all time in ranking
Toronto Maple Leafs #1
Montreal Canadians #2
Edmonton Oilers #3
Detroit Red Wings #4
Boston Bruins #5(but only because of Bobby Orr)
the rest sort of muddle together |

Nothing stupid the predictions.. Truly when you look at it, the Leafs ARE the worst Canadian team.. Montreal has a bit to prove as well and could battle them for the bottom (Ya. I've altered my predictions in the past couple days, Oilers will be better than the Habs) , but Toronto taking a flyer on has-beens (Not including the O'Neill pickup which I think was great BTW) should not automatically have them listed as contenders... Allison and Lindros have LOADS to prove... |

The west is where it will be at this year. Much as I hate to admit it, the Flames defence is just plain nasty this year. They are not looking to shabby up front either. Edmonton has made some nice moves as well.
I am feeling good about my nucks this year though. The big line back in action...second line with Carter and the twins (who will finally have their breakout year)...Cookie (if he signs) Park and linden on the third... and if I had it my way our 4th line would be brookbank, bouck and rutuu (fun). just need a big d-man and cloutier not to melt and we will be deadly.
Really wish we still had May though. The fact that he is gonna play for the Avs makes me kind of ill.
God I miss hockey. |
