I had a kid have an epileptic fit the other day in class.... I was glad my co-teacher was there. Keeping an eye on the kid so he didn't hurt himself, keeping the other 40 in their seats and calm, and getting help for the kid is something that I don't think I could do with my level of korean. I was glad she was there as that situation could of got really dangerous very quickly without here.

CLG, good on you for recognizing that a K coworker was actually helpful. This is the kind of positive thread this board needs once in a while.

Your thread struck a chord with me because I worked with intellectually handicapped people for 8 years while in university. For some reason they are much more prone to seizures than the rest of the population. I must have seen at least a hundred seizures, both little mal and grand mal. My best friend's brother is unfortunately also epileptic and I've seen him go into seizures a couple of times.

There is some good advice here : http://www.neurologychannel.com/epilepsy/prognosis.shtml#first
if you ever encounter a seizure in a student or a friend or a stranger on the street.

By planning good lessons and knowing how to teach. Done everyday at public schools.

She tended to the student and got someone to go get the school nurse while kept the rest of them in their seats... fourtantly he had been sent to the back for hitting his friend eariler so there was a lot of space for him to have the seizure away from his friends.

But yes I think this demonstrates why co-teachers are must in the classroom. Sure we don't always see eye to eye on everything but in general if you cultivate a good relationship with your co-workers (including keeping them well aware of what you are doing in class and where you are going to need help), then there are some great benefits to be had in the korean classroom enviroment.

Uum, where have you been? CLG started a thread just the other day praising co-teachers.

And fights....

My co-teachers always take care of the trouble-makers. Yes, I help break up the fights, but it's all Korean teacher from there. Principal's office. Phone calls to Mom/Dad. Spankings. Beatings. Etc. Frankly, it's hard enough just getting the rest of the class back in line after an "event".

Yup... that too! Just this incident really reminded me about this after all the bashing of co-teachers that goes on here.

One of my 10 year olds hurled in class the other day. While I stood there astounded at how so much vomit could have issued forth from such a tiny human being, the co-teacher had the mop and bucket out and was on clean up detail in the blink of an eye.

God bless that woman!
