Perhaps Ms CLG is just in a bad mood, but I wish I could be left the hell alone at work...
I'm working on a lesson plan I get bugged... Hello, what are you doing?... et al from the kids. Go have lunch from teh teachers...
Then eat my lunch.... oh what are you eating.... why don't you eat at the school cafetria... oh you must be lonely.
I'm never lonely because there is always someone bugging me... argh!! |

LOL. I am in the exact opposite situation. I barely see a soul unless I am in class. |

Ahh, I see your problem.
Would it be considered rude to put up a "Polite Notice" saying "Please do not disturb me I am >>>> On the phone, doing lesson prep etc?
All nicely decorated etc?
When I worked in an open plan office, people i.e my boss would always come and try and talk to me about stuff when it was blantantly obvious that I was on the phone. I mentioned this to a guy who was running some course or other I was on and that is what he advised me to do.

Don't see this as being a problem solely in Korea.
When ARE you available to see your students outside class? |

why does it seem that koreans just lack empathy? it seems they can never imagine themselves in your shoes. a friend of mine worked at a highschool, he was in the main office, and everyday every teacher would want to come say hi. it never occurred to them that if all of them wants to talk for 20 minutes, that adds up to 10 hours a day. why is it so difficult for them?
For example, today i found out when i went to my classroom and the door was locked, that all my classes were cancelled because of a fieldtrip. of course i should have known this as they made an announcement, in a building i do not work in, in a language i can not speak. |

The same goes for me but outside the academic world. My co-workers will ask me what I did over the weekend and if I say "I went to lunch and went to the movies" then they'll inevitably ask me who I went with. When I respond "I went by myself" they always assume I am lonely. They seem to confuse independence with loneliness. They can't understand that sometimes people just want to be alone and think about their issues or work on ideas without interference. These days I just lie and tell them I went with a friend. That's all they need to hear. |

Your workmates and students sound nice and friendly. I hope mine are similar at my next job. |

Weeks away from returning to Australia, one of my co-workers asked me who I was flying with. She was disappointed to learn that I would be on the plane by myself.
I was returning to the country of my family and friends, where people speak my language, where staring is rare and the "HIIIIIEEEE!!!" chorus is inconceivable even in comedy, and she was worried about me being lonely.
Think about it. |

most of the threads you start to complain remind me of several reasons why i don't wanna work in the public school system
don't you ever question whether it's really the best for you? |

I think that maybe Korea represenets typical human behaviour and modern Western society is a bit unusual in placing value on 'alone time'. Just try buying a single movie ticket if you want to see genuine perplexion.
I also have my desk in a staff room of 25 and am constantly being 'disturbed', but I don't mind since half the time it's a teacher or student wanting to bring me coffee, food, or treats. If you want to start a lot of conversations just place a photo of your friend's baby or your white friend and his Korean wife on your desk. |

My, my....you have been here how long now and still complain about these trivial little things? Tragic. Seems your "bad day" is extending itself. |
