OK - I do not know much about computers etc - however I DO know that my trustworthy old computer (bought it new 3 years ago) - and had many things upgraded to it (graphics/sound card/DVD combo burner) etc etc - urgently needs MORE memory -
I have many word documents, games and movies on my pc - and although weekly I delete the movies I have watched - my computer - cannot really take much more into its memore - without getting more memory...
How do I go about getting more memory installed- and I realise many people will tell me - go to Yongsan or Technomart and buy the memory thingy - etc - but really - I wouldn't have a clue as to what memory to buy (or even what you call it) or how to install/plug it in etc - NOT A CLUE...
so does anybody have a simple procedure - or anyone - recommend any PC doctors (I am not fussy on who they are - as long as they do the job - and are willing to come on the weekend) who will come to my apartment and install the extra memory..?
I will consider all advice... |

I think you're talking about Hard Drive memory and not RAM memory. If you need more capacity for movies, music etc then it must be a bigger Hard Drive you need.
You can go to Yongsan or any computer store and get an additional Hard Drive (e.g. 160 gigabyte) for about 100,000 won which will solve your memory needs.
If you really don't think you can open your computer and plug it in then you should ask a nerdy friend or bring the computer physically to the store and have it done there. |

Sounds like you need a bigger HD memory as opposed to operating memory.
I'd get an external HD. Do you have USB ports? I think they connect to those. It couldnt hurt to get a usb stick either, back up all your important files. |

Thanks for your replies and advice... I just don't really know how to walk into Yongsan or Technomart and ask a person - please give give more Hard-Drive memory for my computer (without knowing anything about it) or what exactly I would be buying etc etc
so... today...
I just made an appointment to take my computer to a "PC Doctor" - I happened to see his small shop as my bus was passing by...
and he doesn't speak English - and actually his office is quite a long way from my apartment (maybe 35~40 minutes) but it was the best i could do - I really don't care about the price - whether he charges me 250,000 won to 350,000 won - I just know I need a much BIGGER memory - and I was adviced - just - go and buy this/or that memory and just plug it in - really - I don't even have a clue what to ask for or where to plug it etc etc
so - because I already made the appoinment - I will keep it with the "PC Doctor" - but now you have me thinking -
somebody mentioned RAM - what is that kinda of memory - I also want to make my computer FASTER - whenever I had too many programs, games, movies on my PC - I noticed everything slowing down - whenever I would click something - it just took longer and longer time for the computer to do it (very slow) - WILL getting the new HDD make my computer faster again ALSO - or does it ONLY just give me more memory to store more prgrammes games and movies -
AS I already made the appointment with the "PC doctor" and I really don't care how much it costs me - should I also ask for more RAM - is it possible to just purchase that and add in in alongside the extra HDD - or how does it work... really I want more memory but I also want my computer to work faster again no matter how many movies, games I have installed....??

RAM is memory.
That'll help your computer to run faster if lack of memory is the problem. If it's not, it'll only help a little.
Hard drives are storage.
What you seem to need is a bigger hard drive. That probably won't speed up your computer, but it will let you save more things.
CPU is the device that does most of the thinking work of the computer. Think of it as the brain. From the problems you've been describing, and the way, you probably need a better brain.

Ok - I took my PC to the "PC doctor" today - and he checked it all over - told me - it was a good computer and he installed an additional memory card (I asked him to to remove the current one - as I didn't want to have to reformat or lose any files, programmes etc) - anyway - I watched as he inserted the new memory card - and then I also bought a 256MB USB switch)...
however after I got home - I was looking - and my computer still has A, C, and D drive - but I thought that if I had the additional HDD - then it should show up as "E" drive - but there is no "E" drive - however when I check-out my "C" it shows that I have 37GB of storage -
Does this sound correct - is 37GB big or just average? - is that what it should be after having the new HDD installed? (he only charged me 60,000won for the new HDD and 30,000won for the USB stick - does this sound right?
anyway - when I plug in the USB stick - it shows up as "E" drive - but I originally thought the HDD would show up as E drive - and the USB stick maybe as "F" drive... could someone let me know - if I got the extra HDD storage I was after and is 37GB good or not good...
by the way - my computer does seem to be operating a lot faster... |

37 GB from one drive is very low. What he may have done is partitioned the drive, they like doing that here. That would mean you have 2 "virtual" drives out of 1 HDD. If that is the case, 37 would be probably half, and there should be another 37 or so on a second HD.
Look in your "My computer" menu. The drives show up as A, C, and D. I'm guessing A is a floppy, or no? C is probably the main hard drive, and D is the optical? If this is how it shows, you only have one 40GB hard drive. For a laptop, that is the minimum, and not very much. I have over 40GB of music on my computer, so that would be useless to me.
If he installed an additional "memory card", he probably installed RAM, not a new HDD. If this is the case, you just need an external drive.

You may have been hosed, but who knows? Certainly not you. Sorry, but from what you posted, it seems you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.
Take some time....a few hours, and read up a bit about computers. They really aren't that hard to understand on a basic level.
This will stop you being hosed in a repair shop and actually, it will stop you going to a repair shop. Also, it will make it easier to help you here. |

From the description above, I thought that any computer newbie would be able to understand, but maybe not.
The "chip" that was put into your computer is most likely RAM (aka memory). This is not what you use to store your movies, etc. on your computer, this is what allows your computer to think a little faster. In other words, the more RAM you have the faster your computer will be, theoretically.
A harddrive is for storage. This is what you use for keeping documents, movies, etc. on your computer. It looks like a metal box that is about 5"x8" with a wide cord coming out of the back of it. I'm pretty sure that you didn't have a new one installed in your computer since you don't have a new drive listed on your computer, and the guy didn't do any work with reformatting, etc. In terms of size, 37gb is tiny. You can get drives with up to 500gb of capacity on them these days.
Also, that 256mb USB RAMkey, while being a very nice replacement for a floppy disk, is completely useless for mass storage. In other words, if you want to take movies, etc. off of your computer, you won't even be able to take a whole file of of your harddrive. It was suggested to you that you get an external USB harddrive. They are roughly the size of a travel phrase book and can have a capacity of between 60-120gb. Having one of those would have allowed you to move your files off of your computer in preparation for the new harddrive, that you apparently need, and the disk format that will come with the installation. Though, you could just throw up a partition as well and put all of your files into that area to be safeguarded for later. |

if you're downlloading a lot...and deleting a lot...then you should be defragging your computer at least every two weeks. This will make a big difference by itself. In addition, you might be getting lots of spyware/adware so run adaware or something to get rid of that junk. Also, it might be helpful to get registry mechanic to help get things running more smoothly. |

Thanks - to all who have given advice and suggestions - I purchase a 60GB external drive on saturday that plugs into one of my PC's USB ports - and I moved all my movies, games etc over to it (now E: drive) -
it only cost me 110,000 won and was so easy to plug in and use - so now I guess I have an updated bigger RAM, 97GB in HDD memory, and my new little toy- the 256mb USB stick.... (even though with such a small memory space the USB stick is kinda useless)...
also because it was so cheap to do all of this - I purchased a 19" LCD (flatscreen) monitor -(for only 330,000won - Jooyontech) and finally got rid of that HUGE fat 17" monitor that has been taking up so much space on my desk.....
so thanks for all the advice - you guys really did help me to fix the memory/and speed problems I had been encountering...
also I will start defragging the computer at least every two weeks
- really the movies I have been downloading and deleting every 2-3 days are just 218mb films such as "family guy" "southpark" "simpsons" etc - so quick to download - but (usually I have 10~15 on my computer at any-given time which does take up 2.5 GB space) after watching 2~3 of them after a hard days work - I always delete and re-download more....
I guess it was the computer games taking up most of the space - I have students who come to my apartment - and because of that I have about 20 games - such as FIF2006, starcraft, diablo, Lord-of-the Rings, King Kong etc (and all the smaller nexon/netmarble games - korean kids love) - but they take up 1~3 GB memory storage each...
so I guess I will now save them all to the new E-drive and defragg the computer more often...
thanks - for all the advice... |
