To save you two guys from further embarrassing yourselves, the correct term is "pirate" dvd / cd and not "bootleg". A bootleg is unreleased material usually concerts or stolen recording session outtakes. A pirate is commercially available material that is illegally copied and sold on the black market. |

DVDs are everywhere... from subway stations to street corners... they can cost between 2,000 and 5,000 KRW if you buy 3 or more then you typically get some kind of deal...
In my 3 weeks here I've seen too many vendors to list... if you want a couple of locations as a starting point then outside Gangbyeon Station near Technomart, inside Jamsil station, and over at Yongsan near the E-Mart...
Not really seen too many music CDs, but then again the internet sees music easily downloadable and so freely available... |

If you come out of Exit 7 at Gangnam Underground station there is a guy there. His stall is the third or fourth one along. |

I picked a DVD up once from the corner...10,000... a real steal....get it home, open it up....it's a DVD-R...not worried yet...put it in....no sound files at all....lovely.
Now I just rent them for 1000 and copy them myself. |

If you ever buy any pirate dvds off of these guys, take note, there are 2 types, a dvd copy and something that was filmed off of the screen in a movie theater. Obviously, the first type is the more desireable one. Buyer beware on the second one. The guy will show you the dvd on his tv and say "the picutre is good". But the real problem is the sound. There is a lot of sound quality loss because they are just recording it with a camera mic in the movie theater. Sometimes you can't hear what the characters are saying when they speak in low voices in some scenes. Before you agree to buy the dvd, ask the guy about the source of the material, dvd copy or camcorder. |

You're talking about CAMs... they have the picture and sound file from the same device... you want a Telesync, usually abbreviated to TS which means the camera picture is filmed, but the audio is through a separate output...
I never bother getting hold of CAMs, but I honestly think Telesync are very good, besides the occasional one which has a late arrival walking through the camera shot, lol... and you never get the credits because the lights have gone up by that time and the camera man has to duck out quickly, lol...
You can generally tell whether the film will be a DVD-R however because it will be a film which is actually released on DVD-R or will be so in the next week or two... if a film is showing at the cinema, besides a few screeners which get leaked, it will be sold as a DVD but the quality is actually SVCD and either a CAM or TS |

Just download it all yourself you lunatic! Don't trust these folk on the streets. Personally, I use Soulseek for music, which has never failed even with the most obscure of bands, and various torrent sites for movies. Such as the BitTorrent client and torrentspy.com website. You know it makes sense! |

DING, DING, DING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you are purchasing illegally produced materials in a foreign country, you are asking to get the royal screw-job.
If you want a job done right, do it yourself. |

it's still a bootleg.
and am i the the only person reading through this thread intuitively thinking that this bootlegging and piracy is wrong? it's illegal and it's morally wrong. people just do it like it's nothing. none of my business |

Agree. The record cos have been cheating us for years - maybe since the early 80's. Before that time, an artist took 2~3 years to work on an album, sometimes more. They'd try to make concept albums and make every track an excelent one. Since the 80's the word "filler" has entered the music industry's vocabulary and when they introduced cds, the price of music more than doubled from $8 to $20. Artists started making cds with 3~4 good songs and 10 fillers (junk to fill up the cd).
Independant releases are a whole other matter. Some bands release their own cds nowadays. If you're downloading their stuff without paying for it, you're really hurting them. I think most people are very aware of this fact and try to buy the cd.
As for the movie industry, how often do you watch tv reports about the making of the film and how often do you see reports about the box office receipts? It's always about money with these guys not about the love of film.
In both cases, music & film, people will still go out and spend their money on the official product if they think the product is worth it. Unfortunately, most of the time, the cd is not worth $15 and the movie is not worth $8 (average price). |
