I was wondering how much it would cost to ship a car from korea to north america.. i heard about 3 - 4 million won.. There is a big shipping company Hanjin shipping, but they havnt gotten back to me..
You may ask why I would do such a thing and that it might be a waste of money. Well I own a new Hyundai Tuscani and its become my hobby. The value is worth a lot more in Canada if i were to ship it home, that is of course if the shipping fee is around 4 mil..
anyone have info on this? |

I know Car Talk covered shipping a car from Europe to the US (sorry, can't find the segment, their search engine is even worse then Dave's). Basically, they said it wasn't worth it. Too much work to make it legal, especially wrt emissions. Not sure if that would apply to Korea to Canda as well. But you should do your homework before embarking on this. |

Canada & the US have higher standards for automobiles (emissions, safetly, etc). If you ship a car there, you have to pay to have all that stuff upgraded before they'll release it from customs.
Most folks say it's not worth it. |

You CAN'T legally import a car into Canada from Korea (with a very few exceptions).
http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/E/pub/cp/rc4105/rc4105-e.html
and check the link about importing your vehicle:

This is a quote from that section:
Transport Canadas standards apply to vehicles that are less than 15 years old, and to buses manufactured on or after January 1, 1971. Vehicles originally manufactured to meet the safety standards of countries other than the United States or Canada are not allowed into Canada, unless they are 15 years or older or are buses manufactured before January 1, 1971, or are entering Canada temporarily.
Note here: temporarily is for vehicles like, "Racing vehicles for the duration of the event, show cars for specific events, collectors cars for exhibit only in a museum or similar place." |

It can be done, you just have to make sure that the vehicle meets Canadian standards in regards to safety and emissions. This shouldn't be a problem because Korea builds their vehicles for exports. I don't have any exact figures but, it's likely that a new Korean vehicle will exceed Canadian standards. |

Wrong.
wealthy Koreans buy Hyundais in the U.S. and ship them over here because of the higher safety standards built in cars for export. It's well known that Korea builds crappier more expensive cars for the domestic market.
There were a number of articles in the newspapers a couple of years ago about this. |

Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong.
I will wager 10 million won that you CAN'T do it for a Korean domestic market auto that you intend to have as a domestic use car in Canada.
There are exceptions BUT that is NOT one of them.
and I quote again .....

PS... I worked for CCRA before they were split off and became CBSA...
The above is a quote you can take to the bank. |
