hey guys,

i'm new to the experience of korea (not there yet, working on picking a job), and have had a few recruiters/school mention things to me that are not quite legal:

i had one guy suggest i purchase health insurance for one month, then don't pay any more months, but the insur card could be used for 6 months at the doctor and for prescriptions without anyone noticing AND i had a school tell me to go ahead and come teach at their school even though i'm still waiting on my diploma to arrive which could take several weeks, and have my family just fedex to korea when it arrived, which i assume would mean i'd be working illegally until it got there, and the owner of the school assured me he would take all responsibility for it.

clearly i'm NOT going to fly to korea without a work visa or means of getting one (diploma) - that one makes me a little too nervous. but my question is: are there many things done regulary that are illegal but overlooked by authorities or no one notices? i'm no stranger to this type of doing business as i taught english in brazil for 5 months illegally and encountered no problems - but many things are done that way in south america. is korea like that at all? or is it more like the states where you really HAVE to follow all the rules/laws or you get in serious trouble? just wondering what should be a red flag for me with these schools and recruiters and what's normal business. thanks for you advice!

From the sounds of it, yes, Korea is a lot like that. Corners are cut, laws are ignored--if anyone can figure out the laws, money changes hands. They are trying to clean that up in the ESL industry. I don't know how effective that campaign has been so far. Lately Immigration has been booting out people teaching illegally. How much of a dent they have made is unknown.

Are you sure this isn't a chinese recruiter??
