| so after teaching my first week, i've realized i'm a MORON when it comes to explaining grammar. i barely even some of the names of all the verb tenses, much less explain to a classroom of kids. what do you guys do to help research and explain grammar rules to kids? |

I second that. Swan's is my bible. I have been working on my grammar skills pretty consistently, but I think this break I will work with a grammar workbook, and Michael Swan has a great new one:
| Quote: |
How English Works
English level:
Intermediate to Lower-Advanced
Winner of the English Speaking Union's Duke of Edinburgh Book Competition
Michael Swan and Catherine Walter
Key features
Covers all the important elements in the standard EFL grammar syllabus, and many other topics which are often ignored.
Entry tests to show students what they need to study most.
Short, learner-friendly grammar presentations followed by examples of correct use.
Simple traditional-type exercises to build confidence.
More challenging and innovative exercises to stretch the student.
Wide variety of factual, literary and other authentic texts.
Hundreds of illustrations, cartoons (many taken from Punch, Private Eye, etc) and other visual cues.
Full colour throughout.
Two editions - with Answers and without Answers.
Suitable for use in class, for homework, or for self-study. |
I'm thinking of using this one for my writing classes next semester, and I'm going to try to do as much off it as possible myself over winter break. |

| Grammar for English Language Teachers : With Exercises and a Key -- by Martin Parrott and How to Teach English -- by Jeremy Harmer are both good books. The Parrott book will give you explanations about grammar and explain student weaknesses and the Harmer book will teach you how to teach grammar. It's not just explaining the rules. |

Practical English Usage is the bible for grammar rules. However there is an abbreviated version, called Basic English Usage, that won't strain your back to carry around, is easier to use, and contain answers to the most common grammar questions. |

Anyone know if I can get the Martin Parrott book in Seoul or will I have to pay an arm and a leg through Amazon?
