Hi everyone - this is my first post. Anyway, I am teaching at an international high school attached to the local division of a high school here in Shanghai, China. I've taught in Korea 2x in the past, in Seoul and Daejon. I have a Bachelor's in English and a Master's in Education/Social Studies and have certification from 2 states in the U.S.

Having missed the deadline for applying to the "best" international schools for next year, and considering a move back to Korea, I am considering teaching in either a public school or a university. So here are my questions....

1. Is it possible to get a university position from outside of Korea, at this point?
2. Do ANY of the public schools (especially in Seoul) offer contracts with 2-4 weeks off in the summer and the winter? Most of the positions I have seen offer 14 days off at most. After teaching for 7-8 years at this point, I know for myself that I will definitely be burnt out without a more extensive summer/winter break. So, are there positions with more extensive time off?

Thanks for your time and I really appreciate any responses.
-Brian

Dear Brian-
I'd have love to be able to work in Shanghai. The couple times I've been there I really had fun.
To answer your question #1, yes it's possible to get a university job from outside Korea. However, as universities and colleges normally don't go through recuiters like hagwons and public schools may, they would much rather see their applicants face-to-face in an interview process. In addition, universities and colleges normally do not pay air fare, as they expect the applicants to already be here.

If you want to go for a university/college job (and I think you'd be able), I recommend coming over for the hiring stages and face-to-face interviews that occur roughly in late May to July, for Fall Semester. Then take the rest of the summer off.

If you look around on this board I think you will see that public schools often give much more time off than is in the contract.

In person job hunting - usually works best in Asia.

The public school jobs with the good vacations are being pushed out by useless penpushers.
