Quote: |
Michelle Wies father Wie Byung-wook, a professor of transportation at the University of Hawaii, agreed to a telephone interview with the Chosun Ilbo on Thursday.
Im well aware there that some say, since Michelle Wie is an American why is she making such a fuss. But you know what, the only thing about her thats American is her passport, she is "definitely" Korean. The golfers favorite dish is rice with pork Kimchi soup with extra tofu and toasted seaweed on the side. Her mouth waters when she hears about Bossam (boiled pork) or steamed codfish, and Soondae (Korean sausage) and Deokbokki (broiled rice pasta with Korean chilli paste sauce). She may have been born in America but her first words were Korean, and she did not start learning English until after she was attending school.
These days she enjoys watching Korean variety shows like "I Love Sundays" and "X-Men," she likes to dance to the music of TVXQ, and she sympathized with the main characters of "Winter Sonata" and "Autumn Fairy Tale."

Wie will arrive in Seoul on the 29th to take to take part in the SK Telecom Open, a KPGA event opening on Incheons Yeongjong island on the 4th of next month. |
Uh, oh! Looks like my game needs a new head! I wonder if they'll yank that medal they gave to Hines Ward off his neck and pass it on to her.

I am not claiming to be on the same stage as Wie...
I have been interviewed probably 40 times in the course of owning my business here. I have only had two articles that have quoted me correctly throughout the piece. That's right two. Even the English papers have misquoted or skewed my quotes to fit their story line. Hell 75% or newspaper or magazine articles say I have blue eyes because that's what the very first bookstore article ever wrote (they are brown).
I do not believe anything written in Korean papers. Not one little tiny thing. |

I kind of yawned over this one. When we start worrying about how private individuals define themselves, especially vis-a-vis nationality, we'll start sounding like Koreans. |

Hey I have blue eyes too! According to my students that is, and they see my (brown) eyes every day. To some I am also American (no) and blond (actual colour: light brown).
Good to get it firsthand about the local standards of journalistic integrity. |

I had a friend whose company sent him to Korea. He met and married a Korean girl. But he quit his company and took a job with another company here. And they just stayed on here, and even had a kid here. They had one of those "foreign husband & Korean wife" sort of situations. This was back, oh, last Thursday or so, when weird arrangements like that were considered kooky enough for a newspaper write-up.
In the article, he was a French dance instructor, she was his student, and they fell in love on the dancefloor. Today he still teaches dance to Korea's budding ballerinas, while she owns an art gallery.
None of this was true, but it made readers feel all warm & fuzzy, I guess. |
