I'm a little confused. Does the school give you a place to live that they have choosen for you? or do they give a certain amount of money and if you find a place that cost more you pay the difference? How common is it to get a two bedroom?(if the school provides the housing) My husband and I would like to have baby while we are out there and a one bedroom would be too small. He will be the only one working I don't have a B.A. Also, are most of you happy with your housing? Thanks everyone

it's doubtful the school will give you a 2 bedroom unless you are both working for the same establishment. a lot of schools like to hire couples because it cuts down on their housing costs. if you work for 2 different schools, you could pool your housing allowances and get a 2 bdroom. most schools put you in an apt they already have; others just give allowances.

Ironically enough, my wife and I just went through this (without the baby part...not for another 4 more years...)

We live in a large studio apartment. It's ooooooooooookkkkkkkkkkk. I want a 2 bedroom. So recently, we approached the school with a renewal contract. In that agreement, we are to get a 2 bedroom apartment (area already designated), large salary increases, etc. (we have been there 2 years already).

They agreed without any rebuttle. They said they appreciated us and, in their own way, wanted to keep us a lot longer. We have no problems with that.

Asking for a lot right off the bat may show you as being a bit greedy and may also lessen your chances of renewals, promotions, salary increases, etc. Rather, show them what you can do, then when contract renewal comes, drop it on them.

Now...this isn't to say it's for everyone. Most people here in Korea teaching English, IMO, are here for the max. $ possible. They'll hit the establishment, where they are applying to work, with a monster request. Hey, if the school is desperate enough, they Kudos to them. They may very well get what they want. However, I find that most places aren't THAT desperate and won't go overboard. Also, becareful of the places that advertise 2.8-5.XXX. Those are 90% of the time the places with problems and you most likely will have a headache. Don't get me wrong...the cash is niiiiiiiiiiiiiiicccccccccccccceeeeeeeeeeeee Cool, but I also want to be happy and do the best job I can (hence my building of my current website and now a revamp of my old one).

Sorry, I just went out on a tangent. Smile

Your husband should be able to negotiate a contract where he can receive a housing allowance, usually 300,000, instead of recieving an apartment. You can then find your own place. The only problem with this is that you will have to have a downpayment of your own; probably somewhere between 2 and 5 million won.
