if you find anything out, let me know. i'm looking into opening a bar myself. i'm married to a korean, so i don't think i'll have to go through a lot of red tape. but i don't know the first thing about owning a bar.
but the good news is that i don't have a lot of money just yet either, so i've got a lot of time to learn. |

If you are on an F-2 visa you cannot work at a bar. It's one of the few places you cannot work on that visa.
I do not know if that's the case with an F-5 |

Not specifically: but for foreign investment, 50 million KRW, is the minimum. |

that's interesting... what's the story with that. i'm not questioning you, but rather the law. anyway... it probably won't affect me, as by the time i save enough starting capital, i should be elligible for the f-5... i hope. |

At the foriegn help center at city hall there's a small office that gives out booklets and advice about starting businesses in Southy. The chief, whose English name is Simon, is a helpful guy. Best of luck and be careful out there. It's a different world from the English teaching one. |

you sure about that dude?
I believe the F2 lets a foreigner work just like a korean man!
restaurant, bar, mac donalds, cafe, kimbab shop!
doesnt make any sense not being able to work in a bar!
who told you this? |

When I was getting my f-2!
the told me this.
They said, Mr. chiaa you cannot work in a bar.
If you think about the reason it will make sense.
Vietnamese wife no longer wanted and husband can make her work in a bar as a hostess!
I am 100% sure of this.

I have heard the same exact things from people who have gone there to ask questions. |

What you need is an F2-1/S1 visa. The S1 suffix allows
you to work anywhere except a hagwon.
As for starting your own business.....be careful. You will
die a painful death if you start a business that depends on
foreigners. Foreigners in Korea stick together like similar
ends of a magnet.
I would like to start a "non-German" beer microbrewery/bar
in Incheon. It would take between 250 and 300 million won
to get going. It is possible to get backing, but I have been
burned before in the Korean business world.
I think the stupidest of all ideas is foreigners who want to open
their own hagwon. To do this you would need to spend 100 to 200
million on a building, reno work etc. Having a white face does not
guarantee anything any more. Ajumas want to see modern decor,
cameras etc. Why invest all this when you can make 50,000 an hour
going to their apartments. No overhead, no staff problems, no
government interference. |

A hairdressers catering to foreigners would do a roaring trade in Itaewon. I mean, just imagine a hairstylist who was au fait with Western norms and styles- knew immediately what a trim or short back and sides was etc. someone to cater to our western ladies...who wouldn't dye the wrong colour, take off 1cm instead of 1cm. or leave your heair singed and falling out.
I see a couple of wayguks have started such a business in incheon, also there is a reasonable Korean owned salon above burger king. They don't do a perfect job, but certainly a lot better than the inevitable butchering/ disaster you can expect from a normal korean place. (This is often the case if you aren't absolutely fluent in Korean). |
