This weekend, thousands will cram Seoul's streets to celebrate the Buddha

April 28, 2006 �� Take a look at the colored lanterns hanging throughout Seoul's streets and you'll know what time of year it is: The time when Buddhists come together and celebrate the birthday of Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of their religion. What the lanterns won't tell you is that it's also Children's Day.
This year, the two holidays fall on the same day, May 5, though the festivities for the Buddha's birthday kick off in late April.
Although obviously a Buddhist celebration, the festival attracts all sorts of people. The Seoul police estimate that 300,000 participants, including tourists, spectators, foreigners, Buddhists and non-Buddhists, will fill the streets of downtown Seoul. In a survey by the Seoul city government, the city's foreign residents voted it the best festival in town, organizers claimed.
It's also an opportunity to practice a bit of inter-faith relations, with the Catholic Archbishop of Seoul sending official congratulatory messages to the head monks.
The main draw has always been the Lotus Lantern Festival. Since the religion was introduced to Korea in 372, its adherents here have celebrated the holiday with lighted lanterns. Buddhism initially prospered in Korea, particularly during the Goryeo period (918-1392), but was suppressed during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1911). Even during the crackdown on temples, though, the tradition of lighting lanterns to celebrate the Buddha's birth managed to survive.

To mark the Buddha's Birthday, Seoul will host a number of lotus lantern events throughout the city. From April 28 to May 5, Bongeun-sa Temple in Samseong-dong (Samseong Station, Subway Line 2) will hold an exhibit of traditional Korean paper lanterns. On the evening of April 29, there will be parades and performances at Jogye-sa Temple and Insadong. Finally, on April 30, there will be major celebrations throughout Seoul, including the famous Lotus Lantern Festival. A Buddhist street festival, complete with food, bazaars and other activities, will be held from 12:00 to 7:00 p.m. along the street in front of Jogye-sa Temple. Parade participants will gather in Dongdaemun Stadium from 4:30 to 6:30, with the actual parade to take place from 7:30 to 9:00. The parade will proceed along Jongno, starting from Dongdaemun and ending at Jogye-sa Temple. The grand finale of the evening will take place from 9:30 to 10:30 in front of Jogye-sa Temple. To get to Dongdaemun Stadium, take subway lines 2 or 4 to Dongdaemun Stadium Station. Jogye-sa Temple, meanwhile, is approachable from either Jonggak Station (Subway Line 1) or Anguk Station (Subway Line 3). The actual Buddha's Birthday is on May 5, and is celebrated with Buddhist ceremonies at temples all across Korea.
