Hi, this is Carlos from Canada. I will finish school (undergraduate, BBA) in about 2 months and i'm thinking about teaching english in korea. I've just came back from my seoul trip and I'm under the impression that finding jobs wouldn't be that big of a problem (i walk around to a couple of institutions and some of them want to offer me contracts right on the spot). What seems to be a big issue is acquiring the teaching Visa. I'm an indonesian (born and raised) and have been studying in Canada for the past 4 years or so. I'm very confident in my english ability and have previous experience in working with ESL students. But since I'm not a citizen of an english speaking country (OZ,US,CANADA,ETC) I was told that it was impossible for me to get the E2 visa. One of the institution even told me to try to look for a smaller institution and teach without the visa (which i'm not keen on trying). Suggestions anyone???
Thanks

My sister could use a husband Sorry! Unfortunately it is IMPOSSIBLE to get the visa, even though your English is probably better than quite a few on this board. Marry a westerner and get that citizenship or marry a Korean and get an F2. Sorry |

There are numerous online and phone teaching opportunities these days. Check out the korea job link. Some of them hire Filipino teachers and tell them to lie to the students about their nationality. The boss doesn't care, but the students do... |

Sorry, Xarlos, no dice.
I worked with a guy from the Netherlands with a Ph.D (he actually wrote a book about Korea recently - many of you on Dave's will be familiar with it), but Immigration, in its infinite wisdom, decided a few years ago to restrict E-2 visas for English teaching to citizens of English-speaking countries. This Dutch friend was let go (reluctantly, by our employer), even though he was probably the most qualified and one of our best teachers.
Sorry to break the bad news. Good luck. |

Its not about being native. Its about having the right passport. If you dont have one, its impossible.
Actually, it is possible. Get an F2 visa by marrying a Korean. You will be able to teach without one of those fancy passports required by immigration. |

i'm married to a korean and i have an F-2 visa but i'm not allowed to teach... the only way for a non-native english speaker to teach english in korea (legally) is to be a korean citizen... |

What are you doing in Korea if you are not teaching? |

Um, yes, you are allowed to teach. F2 visa holders are not restricted in their employment choices. You are allowed to teach, if you can find a school that will hire you. |

I might have to differ with you there Jinju. By Immi standards he is allowed to teach (or work) pretty much wherever. However, the local Edu office may say no, and even hogwons have to pass their teachers through the Edu office. |

we asked the immigration about this... the only thing that changed for F2 visa holders is that they don't need to get an employment permit anymore, but teaching english is still limited to passport holders of the six countries considered by the government as english-speaking countries...
i do have an online part-time job moderating for a forum... doesn't pay much but better than doing nothing... i guess i don't have enough courage to work illegally... |

Thats a HUGE difference. Break immigration laws, and you get deported (on an E2, not F2). Break the education office's laws and crap all will happen to you. In all your years of living in this country, have you ever heard of the MOE sending out a hit squad to catch people working illegally? I havent. Why? Probably because they dont send their gestapo out to catch people. Immigration does. As an F2 immigration has no say in what you do. The MOE may, but really, are you afraid of the MoE?
Op,
as an F2 you can do privates. Geez, moderating for a website? Do some privates and make some serious cash. 50,000 an hour sound good? Hook up with some privates or post an ad on worknplay and you will get some offers. If I had all day I would do 2 or 3 privates a day and earn some good coin. |
