We've all seen threads about vicious teachers who give their kids hilarious names, but what about the people who insist on calling themselves horrible things?
I had a student who wanted to call herself "Olabia" (I intervened.)
I recently met a weirdo who calls himself iPatriot." He says all the foreigners think his name is Patrick, but then he proudly spells it out for them. It ticks me off just to say it, actually, so I try not to. |

I always say the best thing I can do for Korean kids isn't so much teaching them English but getting them to pick a good Western name that won't make them seem like total dorks when they do their graduate work in the USA. No Oscars, Melvins, Berthas, etc. |

I had a class full of obituary names...Rose, Esther, Mildred, etc.
I gave thug names to kids in one class my first year here...Deltron, LaKeisha, etc. Don't know if it stuck with them past middle school, but one can hope. |

I'm surprised how many of my girls take the name Micky because they think Micky Mouse is cute. Cassiopia and Slayer also seem popular for some reason. |

Where did she get that name?!

Intervention is also warranted when posters want to have usernames like "Troll_Bait," "Yu_Suk_As," and "Pickup_Artist" and kermo
Chances are good that they'll change their name.
I've run into old students of mine and had conversations like this:
A: Hi, Megan!
B: I'm not Megan anymore. Now I'm Mickey.
If they apply for grad school abroad, they'll probably use their Korean name. |

If I worked with boys, I'd try and give them awesome names such as
Optimus Prime, Starscream and Megatron.
Instant conversation starter if they went over seas! |

I always try to give them names like Bruce, Maurice, Elvin. Sometimes a little Flash, Steel, Bullet works with the older kids. |

I think she was going for "Olivia."
I turned purple and collapsed into a quivering heap.
As for the name "Kermo," its origins are far too geeky to be adequately explained without considerable embarrassement. I like it, though, because it's sort of friendly, quite gender-neutral and not too hard to remember. |

When I taught at hagwons that had kids with English names, I only used the name if it was an appropriate one. For instance, I refused to call anyone Super Mega Ultra Power just because he threw a fit and demanded it. Instead, I'd revert back to their Korean names. |

To those who attended Korean class, do they give you or make you choose a "Korean" name?
If not, why doing this in Enlgish class? I personally think it is ridiculous. |

I took a Korean class for a short while a long time ago. They gave me a Korean name. I think I have about four or five Korean names. I think it's fun. It's a way to really dive into it all. But, I do think it should be a choice. Names shouldn't be imposed on someone. |
