As in the Canadian electronics store? I doubt it. But, there must be some store somewhere in Korea that's called 'Future Shop'.

The closest might be that Hi-Mart chain. Outside of that, you're either locked into department stores or Technomart/Yongsan.

Actually they were bought out by an American chain a few years back, Best Buy I believe. From 1995-97 I worked at the Oakville (Ontario) store and I enjoyed my time there. Made good cash, got promoted to management level and made a lot of good contacts. The company philosphy was a little overbearing though. To give an example, each morning someone would scream at the top of their lungs (I kid you not) "HOW'S EVERYBODY FEELING THIS MORNING?" And we would all yell back just as loud "SUPER FAAAAAANNNNNNNNNTASTIC!!" Very Happy

You one of those guys that would treat the customer like an ahole because he didn't want to buy a useless 5 year extended warranty on establish solid state technology like televisions?

Man, I loved that. Like, errr, dude, TV, bathtub curve. If a TV is going to fail, it will fail during the standard warranty period or at its life's end. If 5 years from now I can't afford to buy a new 13" TV cash, I'm pretty pathetic.

No, thank you very much I treated and got along well with all my customers, but thanks for trying to flame me. As for the warranty, while the company DID make money on it, it also was good protection for the customer whether you like to believe it or not. Tvs were not my dept. but I can tell you that tvs used to have 2-3 year warranty on them but the companies cut it back to a year, and why do you think that was? Obviously for a 13" tv it wouldn't be beneficial, doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out, but for bigger tvs I've seen first hand experience that it DID pay off.

I sold fax machines, cell phones, photo copiers, cameras, discmans, etc. Literally I've had people come in days after their standard warranty ended on their fax machine (or other electronics) and they hadn't got the extra protection. At that time (this was back in 95) it was $75 just to LOOK at it and then parts and labour on top of that.

So yeah it's a gamble. Sure you can buy something and perhaps never have a problem with it but if you do you ended up paying big time. On a $400 fax machine an extra 2 years was like $30. It was well worth it and not a rip-off. But hey that's just opinion Wink

Sometimes they are good, sometimes they are bad. But if you believe FutureShop (or any other store) are offering these warranties out of kindness or customer appreciation and not making money of them, then well, you can guess the rest Wink

Of course they aren't like I already stated, please see above. Also, they get a better deal on getting servicing due to the huge volume they get than Joe bloe walking in off the street. So like I said it's win-win situation in most cases.

I'm not trying to flame you. But almost every consumer advocacy group on the planet says those extended warranties are mostly cash cows for the store and not really worth it for the buyer. If you're buying an $800 TV odds are you're putting it on your gold card which may well come with its own extended warranty plan. (I've actually used that plan with my Amex gold card way back when...) There were some products I believed such a plan was actually good. Things that are new and have a lot of moving parts and have very high repair costs. VCRs were generally a good thing to get the extended warranty. But I can't say I've ever had a TV or known someone who bought a TV that didn't meet the bathtub curve in terms of failure. A one year warranty on a TV would be no problem. Most solid state products will either fail during the first year or during the last year of its serviceable life.

Every time I've ever bought anything at Future Shop, 80% of the time I have problems with the sales guy trying to pressure me into getting the extended warranty. It's almost always turned a pleasant shopping experience into a negative one.

Ok fair enough. I worked with some people who were pushy and believe me I know that is a big turn-off. I might agree with you on your average tv, as it wasn't my department so I can't say for sure, although the big screen ones I would definitely pay the extra for just cause you're shelling out so much already.
As far as fax machines go, it's definitely worth it. And for cell-phones we actually gave a loaner phone while the customers' was being repaired which was a great selling point. Even with a gold card it didn't get you that. Anyway we'll agree to disagree on this one. Thanks for making clear you weren't flaming. And sorry for your experience with pushy salespeople. Some of us are knowledgeable and really do want to help the customer.
Very Happy

Yes, the chain is running them both concurrently (Future Shop & Best Buy) side by side in most malls that I've seen right next to each other or maybe a block or two apart. The stupid thing is, everybody knows it's the same owner, but they carry almost (but not quite) identical product lines at slightly varying prices (you never know which store is cheaper), so if you're looking for a spindle of 100 DVDs or a 1GB memory stick or a DVD player, you never know which place will be cheaper unless you visit both.

For actual internal computer hardware such as HDs, disk drives, video cards, RAM, etc. they are both such a rip off it hardly matters whether you can save a few bucks at one over the other.

Luckily, I have solved this dilemma by never shopping at either one unless exceptional circustances demand it.
