Just had an interview for a private/public school position. Recruiter says apt is old but "better" housing is under construction and will be ready in a couple months after I start.
Does this sound fishy? Im afraid the new apt will never appear. |

It sounds (smells) like my ex's beaver after a month in the bush with no access to water. |

Listen there is no new apartment. Koreans are decent enough folk but they do not like to disappoint people so they will tell you what you want to hear. As westerners we find this dishonest but honestly they don't mean it that way. (especially in this kind of deal) Now hogwon owners can be a bit shifty anyway so add the two together and I would say the there is a 99.99% chance there is no new apartment.
List of excuses:
not finished.
taking longer
don't worry next month
(next month) Oh well rainy season slowed it down
Your "apartment" isn't finished
don't worry next month
All of the above mean. Gee I hope he/she quits asking about it. You will find yourself 6 or 7 months in the contract and then ......well "no move" for just a few months you can just live there. I am sure it is okay.
Sorry but that is the probable scenerio.

What the other posters say is true. The promise of better housing down the road may just be a scam. On the other hand, none of them have met the boss and so don't know for sure. Not all bosses are corrupt, cheating rats. This is a judgement call.
If you can speak to a teacher who is in the school now, ask if the apt thing is true. |

Ask for the name, location, floor and room number of the apt. in question. Tell the recruiter (and/or the school) that you have a couple of freinds in Korea who are going to check it out before you come.
Just an idea...bluff them and see what they do. Or you could ask the current teachers to check it out for you. If they speak Korean, they could ask the building owner (if it's a "ju-tek") if there is a room reserved for "X" hakwon.
A bit of work, I suppose. If it will be the deciding factor, then I think it's worth it for you to try. |

Just talked to recruiter about getting ahold of past teachers. She says there has never been English teachers there before. I think I'll pass.
Thanks |
