I'm not familiar with public schools, so I was wondering if this sounds like a decent position compared to other ps jobs. If it is not, please let me know why.

Details:

Start date: May 8th
Hours: 1:00pm-5:30pm
Days: Mon-Fri
Salary 2.2 million
Vacation: total 4 weeks
Full benefits: single housing, airfare, severance, medical, pension, vacation

It's an afterschool program so you won't be teaching real public school classes. I'd imagine that you'd expect another hour or so of prep-time. What's the payment method? Be weary of anything involving two accounts.

It's not a public school position. You will be working the afterschool program. If you are signed directly with a public school then it might be OK. Most likely you will actually be signed to a 3rd party subcontractor who sends you to the school. These are usually worse than a hakwon job.

Really? Why is it worse than an academy job? The hours seems okay and the vacation time is 4 weeks, compared to 10 days at an academy.

Because you tend to end up working through a 3rd party. There are lots of scams to be on the look out for with these positions. Just be careful. make sure your visa is with the school. make sure you get paid into your acount and no one else has access to it.

If it's not going through a third party and if it's with a school or a school district it looks like a good job with a slightly better than average starting salary. If you like working with grade 1-6 elementary students and you're not being farmed out by a hogwan it might be a pretty good gig with really good hours.

I had a friend who had a gig like this in Seoul a couple of years back: 20 hours a week--all in the early afternoon(12-4, I think), 2.4 million and hired directly by the school. But these jobs are rare and you have to be careful about the particulars: look at the housing, read the fine details about vacation/"time off" and see who you would be answering to. But if it all seems great, after close inspection, you may have just lucked out.

The vacaton is probably one week in the summer, one in the winter, plus national holidays. Which adds up to 4 weeks. But really it's only two weeks and a day here, a few days there.......

No, I was told it was 2 weeks in the winter and 2 weeks in the summer. And the guy I'm dealing with doesn't seem to be a "third party" because he stated he could provide the teacher with either 400-500,000 won for housing allowance or provide housing.

Let me clarify something, this job isn't for me. I was asked by my employer's close friend to find someone for him because the teacher he was talking to pulled out at the last minute for personal reasons.

The reason for my post was just to see how this particular job compares to other public school jobs because I do not know much about public schools positions.

From the replies, assuming I am dealing directly with the school, it sounds like a good position. Agree?

Anyway, thanks for all your replies.

It sounds like an ok position pay wise, not much more than OK. The hours seem good though.

Yeah, it looks like a good deal. It also depends a lot on who is in charge. My friend works at an afterschool gig, but he has to be there at 11 to prepare for his 1 o'clock class. Others I know who have similar jobs can show up at 12:55 and they're okay with it.

As far as the pay, it looks okay. Most jobs I looked into that were 2.2 and from 1-4:30 and didn't include other benefits. This one sounds good, and if he's getting two weeks plus two weeks that is a lot better than all of the afterschool jobs I looked at.

Really, nobody can give you a sure answer as to what is a good job and what is a lemon. Korea is a hit or miss place. The details you've given sound fine, but you may not like the school. Find out more about the larger context.

Yes if your friend likes elementary kids.

Right. I don't think anyone was equivocating: they just know better than to stamp "Good Job" on a position where none of the very vital particularities are known.

On paper, it looks great! Who knows about reality? You provided very little as far as details go and we posted based upon that. Quite simply, there are a lot of factors to consider and the information isn't there.
