Music is the best thing in the world of course and it's nice to have a music thread of this kind in the jobs forum (and I'm also particularly bored this evening). I'm not asking for songs of use in class from a language-learning perspective. Rather, I want songs that are of use from a cultural perspective as well - songs that aren't necessarily works of genius lyrically or God's gift to EFL, but are somehow expressive of Anglo-American society in a very general way, songs that are great to listen to. Kids SHOULD have an education in Western Pop/Rock OF COURSE because Korean pop music is such contemptible rot!
Some girls at school want music recommendations from me, bless them. As a man of lofty genius, with an encyclopedic grasp of all things music, I'm like a kid in a sweet shop if someone asks me for this. I don't really need help, I just felt it'd be fun to see what YOU would use (or have used) in a similar situation. I don't wanna just give them stuff I'm into because Pink Floyd, Punk and The Doors will go right over their heads.
Here's what I've got so far for them:
Pop/ballad - 'Kiss me', by Sixpence None the Richer (remember that?).
Pop/Rock - 'Jump' by Van Halen (classic, feelgood song expressive of Summery, fun California).
Pop/teen-girl group/dance - 'Wake me up' by Girls Aloud (yongook saram like me too, so that's nice).
Pop/80s - Madonna - 'La Isla Bonita'. Atmospheric, timeless and jolly nice.
Rock/melodic - 'Mr Blue Sky' - ELO (Beatles-y, happy, great for kids, of use lyrically)
Pop/dance - 'The Real Thing' - Tony Di Bart. That's proper pop music, folks.
