So midterms are next week and the high school students are very busy preparing, as are the Korean teachers who have to make tests. I have nothing to do. Several classes have been cancelled and I'm starting to feel lazy. Don't get me wrong; I don't mind the occassional day off or cancelled class. But the past two weeks (and next week I have no classes because of exams) I've hardly done anything. I have worked in schools in Canada and Thailand and have always had to work hard. Now its like I hardly work.
A happy medium would be nice. I remember my days in a hagwon, slaving away for 6 or 7 classes in a row. Lesson plans, grading, parent and faculty meetings with very little time to rest. Even public schools in Thailand (where English is generally less stressed than it is here) have the foreigner do some oral testing which is incorporated into the overall English grade. I test nothing. I don't see my class as a joke, nor do most of the students. It would be nice for the students who work very hard in my class to get some sort of reward.
I can't help to feel guilty (silly, I know) while everyone is so busy and stressed and I'm doing NOTHING. Yeah, I would like to join in some of that productivity.
I know not all public schools are the same. I was just wondering if others in a similar situation have felt some of these things...
Meanwhile I have lots of time to do highly valuable things like posting on Dave's!
Have a great day. |
