Hello board! I just joined the board and want to ask a few questions. I was interview over the phone about teaching in Korea By a recruiter named Don Parks in Atlanta GA. He filled me in on things about the program and told me what I needed to do to get my application completed. I just wanted to here from some people that have done this. If you are in Korea teaching or have been in Korea teaching any info would be appreciate. Responses form African American participants would be appreciated also but all are welcome. Basically I want to know if the pay is good to live on, are the living conditions good, and how the students/ people are. The recruiter made it sound ok but you can only know if you hear from people who have done it. Also if you have been involved with Mr. Don Parks it would also be nice to know how he handled things with getting you placed in a Job. Thank you in advance to all that reply to my message. |

The monthly salary is good for English Teachers to live on. Students can be a pain to deal with depending on which hagwon you teach at. Your prospective boss's number one priority is money. Allot of them don't support foreiners when they discipline students. The parents think, "I'm the only one that knows my child, foreign teacher should not discipline my child, and foreign teachers is there to teach only," no matter how poorly they behave at times. This is not the case at every hagwon though. Some bosses will be supportive. It's a 50/50 crapshoot when you come to South Korea.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but a prosepctive teacher's chances decrease significantly if they are African American. Korean employers are racist.
I have not been involved with Mr. Don Parks, so I can't give you any insight. |

If talking about hagwons, it's more of a 90/10 crapshoot. |

I wasn't aware there was much of a market for teaching information please. Never heard of it, in fact. |
