the actual teaching criteria and information on the schools provided by recruiters. I have gotten the impression that positions are exaggerrated in order to fill positions as quickly as possible. I am coming to Korea this month for the first time and have been offered several positions. The catch is that when being approached by people trying to place you they aren't exactly truthful. The position that I have most likely settled on is in Apgujeong, Dangnam, Seoul. What info can you guys give me on this supposedly affluent area of Seoul? I was a "greenhorn" just a few weeks ago that was ready to accept the first position that was offered to me, but after research and patience I think that I have a better grasp of what to expect. Is this a reasonable contract?
1. 2.0 million won
2. 10-5 blocked shift with own students (no trading)
3. Single housing
4. Up-front airfare
5. Reimbursement for expedited passport
6. and all of the other usuals
I am definitely looking forward to the experience, and I think that I am becoming more and more educated to this process everyday. For instance, recruiters not listening to your job criteria and hoping that you are naive enough to take the first thing that comes along, or misreprenting positions only to get their commission. I will add that the position in Seoul I was contacted directly by the head teacher that has been working for that particular school for 6 years. I think that says something. Any info is appreciated. |

One important question to ask is how many of the teachers have been there more than one year. If none of them have then that doesn't necessarily mean it is a bad place to work but it does mean they don't consider it important to treat you well enough that you will want to re-sign. |

You were contacted by the head teacher... was s/he a Korean?
TALK to the FOREIGN teacherS (note the plural here) at the school. Get their e-mail so you can contact them directly without the school listening and get the real scoop on the school. |

I would 2nd that. If there are any doubts about the school, insist on being able to talk to the current teachers directly. Any bona fide employer will not hesitate to offer you contact numbers/emails.
Your basic job outline sounds pretty much standard. Could be nearly any job out of the billion million jobs here! |
