I just want to know if anyone has had to renew a Canadian Passport while being here. My passport is good until May....so I only have a few months and I don't want anything to take longer then it has to. I've read all the info on the DFAIT websites etc, but we all know there's almost always something that may come up and delay the process. Anything to share on this?

Theres a current thread on renewal turnover time that has some info.

Its pretty straightforward if youve got all your docs in order.

If you plan to travel before it expires, good idea to renew it now. Some countries wont let you in with less than 6 months validity left.

I was just downloading the forms myself yesterday (I'm in Canada now) and there was a download form for those outside the country as well. Just google "passport Canada" and you'll get the page you need with the info.

Really? You can do it at the Canadian Embassy?

That is great news!

Anyone know if you can do it at the consulate in Busan. I'm in Daegu and it's much easier and convenient to travel to Busan. I need to get it done by the summertime. Anyone in Busan done it there??

They can issue you a new one in as little as two days....I had an emergency situation when I lost my passport but had to leave soon....they cranked one out for me real fast. I don't know that renewing one would take long, likely not 6-8 weeks I would think....they make passports at the embassy after all.

thank you cape breton
as you seem to one in the know, do you also have any idea for how long the new passport is good for? i had no idea that they were created in korea. I assumed they were done in hull. I havent lived in canada since 1989, europa and the US, and when i was renewing from washington DC, i had to send it to hull....

I don't know if this is the case with all passports renewed in Korea but mine is only valid for one year....maybe the super long delay comes from them sending it to Canada but the issuing office is Seoul for mine. There might be something to that. If you're in Seoul or close by, you should pop in and ask em their phone system was a tangled automatic mess for me.

it takes 2 weeks to renew a canadian passport in seoul

you need:

Birth certificate,
old passport
passport photos
gurantor
2 references that have known you for two years (of 4 in the case of a person without a gurantor).
+ money.

Then go to korean immigration and report your change of details and also to transfer any re-enry permits you have (they'll do it for free!)

hey. thanks for the info. question though. Guarantor. I have seen a couple of different descriptions for a guarantor. I hvae only been in my city for eleven months, so i dont think I can qualify for having one. I think the person had to know you for an extended period of time. I also saw in the canadian passport page that without a guarantor, one simply paid a higher fee. Thats fine with me if its correct. Another question, just to be a pest. Is there a way to renew my passport for more than one year? I havent lived in Canada since 1989, and have no plans to return in the next couple of years.
Many thanks.

Hmmm.. I thought a passport renewal meant getting a new 5 year passport. I'd also like to go to the consulate in Busan to do it. I presume it can be done there.

Be careful with the photos and details of your past 2 years, or past 5 years if you use the "in lieu of guarantor" form. They want addresses and employment history. (I plan to fill in the blanks as best I can)
