Is this an odd thing or am I just making a big deal of nothing here....
I teach adults one to one. In one of the lessons the student is supposed to introduce themselves formally in English, as if it were a business meeting. I had a female student (approximately my age) tell me in her introduction, before her name even, that she was "single now".
Similar odd things have been said by other female students, but this one seemed more obvious and less... joking... I guess.
A previous student would tell me things like "I lie to my boyfriend..." and then ask rather pointedly in future lessons about giving directions "Where is your apartment, what would you do if I visited you..." ?
Anybody else on here encounter this kind of stuff. I have to admit the attention is a little flattering, even if it is only meant in fun, but sometimes it makes the class awkward.

Maybe more is going on under the surface, I don't know....But it could be that they are just trying to establish a 'human' connection--make a warm atmosphere. |

I had a female (married) student who would say similar things to me once in a while. At first I wasn't sure what to make of it, but later I realized it was all just joking. She liked to see my reactions and the reactions of the other students. I suppose she could have been serious, but I never let it get any further than a few flirty comments in class. |

I would be wary. Being a student, the insinuation or even a rumor that something has happened can bring you a pile of grief. |

I've had adult female students who know I'm married ask if I'd ever have a girlfriend. I make the distinction between 'female friend' and 'girlfriend', but they stick with the 'girlfriend' meaning. |
