The original theatrical versions of the first three "Star Wars" films are finally coming to DVD on September 12, two years after diehard fans blasted George Lucas for releasing only the digitally modified 2004 versions of the celebrated trilogy in a boxed collection.
This time, "Star Wars," "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi" will be available individually and appear on DVD exactly as they did in their respective theatrical runs in 1977, 1980 and 1983.
Each release, distributed by 20th Century Fox, will be a two-disc set that also includes the digitally tweaked 2004 edition.
The DVDs will be available only through December 31. |
I am so buying this. |

How many times we have to buy this?
1) Star Wars on VHS
2) Star Wars on VHS letter box
3) Star Wars on VHS, special editions
4) Star Wars on DVD, special editions with more monkey flukin'
5) Star Wars on DVD, original version
Soon:
6) Star Wars on HDVD, special edition
7) Star Wars on HDVD, original version
And let's not forget Lucas can still make a version with missing scenes:
Star Wars: Luke with Biggs scenes
Empire: Wampa attack on the Hoth base scenes
Jedi: Sandstorm battle after the Jabba battle, Vader does the force choke on the Emperor's guards...
So that's at least 8 version... |

Are those scenes kickin' around anywhere on the internet? Or are they in some kind of crazed Lucas vault? |

You can find stills on the net:

The old Star Wars role playing game used some stills from the unused scenes, notably the Jedi Vader/red guard choking scene. |

I like the idea put forth by one AICN talkbacker, who suggested a class action suit against Lucas for lying when he said he would never release the OT on DVD. I mean, him saying that was the only reason I bought the 2004 trilogy.
That's not gonna happen, so I'll settle for a trade-in promotion.

You know when they say "for a limited time only" for dvds, that's a load of beep! After the 4 month deadline, you'll always be able to find originals on Ebay or "special Asian editions" made here in Korea or China. |

The Franklin Mint, maker of "limited edition" civil war chess sets and "limited edition" collector plates, was sued once by a collector over its misleading use of the term "limited edition". Basically the Franklin Mint would just keep cranking the stuff out for years without a seeming limit.
The judge actually ruled in the Franklin Mint's favor. If the item is simply identified as "limited edition" and no actual numbers are given ("only 45 firing days!" or "Limited to 20,000 copies!"), then limited edition can refer to the life of the casting mold itself. Molds have a finite lifespan before they wear out. Therefore there is a theoretical limit to the edition.
Buyer beware. |

Also, it's unlikely that the product will be produced to infinity...hence it is a limited edition. |

George Lucas is not trustworthy. He's lied before. Way back when vcrs first came out he said Star Wars would never be released onto home video. It took some time, but he eventually did.
If the market "forces" are strong enough, virtually any dvd will be re-released. I got sucked in by the video co's and bought the 2 disc limited edition of Fight Club. Then about a year later, they released the identical product minus the limited edition stickers. I guess what made mine limited was the stickers. Ha!
In this day and age collectables are almost worthless. When that Star Wars dvd comes out, many people will go out and buy at least 2 copies. Then in the future, you'll see people on Ebay almost giving them away cause there's too much competition selling them.
Basically, I am trying to say "Don't worry. You'll always be able to buy it. Limited edition? Yeah, right."
If it were a truly limited edition, they'd reveal the number being produced and sell numbered copies. Somehow I don't see that happening either. |
