I DID have the option "I can remember the old format", but I don't know what happened to it! I've been here that long, too... |

More options. I put the max, but, with a break or two, have been here longer than that. |

Joined international Dave's on 17th Oct '04. Been reading/lurking since then, although didn't want to come to Korea until roughly a year ago, so read the Korea boards more intensely from then. I thought it was full of total twits. |

If my memory serves me correctly:
Spring/Summer 97 (first read it).
Started posting later in the year.

I've been here since spring of '96. Remember the old format where you didn't need to post your ID? You could just post...those were the days!!
That was before they spun off the Korean board... |

I've been on for about an hour now.
Oh. I think it was about a month or a bit more before my Joined date when I started lurking here. Prior to that, I couldn't call it lurking. I'd stumble upon the "Old Dave's" or "Pre-2003 Dave's" or "Proto-Dave's" or "Cro-Magnon Dave's" or whatever you call it a few times a year and burn an hour.
The first time I read Dave's ESL Cafe (though I guess it could have been a different site) was about '98 or '99. I didn't bother bookmarking it, as it seemed more exclusively English-teacher-focused then than now, and I don't recall seeing too many general (Korea-related) topics. At least none that interested me.
Following one thread on the old board, I found the link to Prisoners of Wonderland, which I then read start to finish. That was fairly intense. Basically, I'm a sucker for that kind of thriller, fictional or real-life, and as it's based in Korea, I can relate so easily to it and I don't have to be a teacher to really and truly "get" the drama and the tension. I can imagine how bad it was only too well, though it was still a page-turner.
I thought (and kind'a hoped ) there'd be more P.O.W.-type gems buried in other threads, but there weren't. Oh, of course there were the colourful exchanges between posters, often just trading insults, but also a heap of one-upmanship over incomes, easy work schedules, and predictable harrassment of people with job/employer problems:
"See, that's the difference between losers like you and people like me. I play the Koreans like a fucking bass fiddle, they don't play me. They play suckaz like you. Your main problem is, you ain't me!"
Who wants to read 39 threads like that? So I didn't check in very often, because "Do you like Bibimbap?" and "Did you see today's exchange rate????" aren't much of a draw.
The look of the place then... Really stripped-down. No photos, no avatars. Posting-by-carrier-pigeon sort of operation. I wondered what people got out of Dave's. But I know my assessment of it wasn't really fair.
What does surprise me a bit are all the posters here who say they were members nearly 10 years ago. Do I not recall seeing any of your names in that old board because you didn't post much, or I just happened to read it when at times when you weren't posting? Or did you change your user names? I _think_ I remember seeing The Urban Myth, I'm positive I saw the names panthermodern and Circus Monkey. People have mentioned anda, who I do recall seeing. There was also some amazing blowhard called... something like Buruma or Booma? Anyway, the rest of you who were members then and now, none of you really register. I guess you weren't very popular. |

On the old board, you didn't have to post a name with your your message. A lot of people posted anonymously...including myself. There was so much flaming back then that it took an act of courage to post either your real name or your screen name.
That board was a lot of fun at times, but for those who were new to the board, it was a little intimidating. Things have mostly changed for the better, especially after they broke down the categories. I started using "ajuma" after the requirement for registering was instituted. |
