So the guy was bringing sesame oil to Korea? You can get sesame oil anywhere in Korea. Confused Er- Canadian sesame oil must be pretty damn good stuff for someone to try to smuggle it back to Korea... I also saw they let him continue onto Korea. I've heard of normal passengers being treated much worse. Nice that they let off the sneaky passenger so easily, but those of us who follow the rules can be treated much more harshly. Evil or Very Mad

Oh, well- he was probably old and couldn't speak English, I'll bet. I can't wait 'til I'm 80 and can get away with every trick in the book. Wink

Possibly. But what to make of this:

Quote:
The passenger was told he could either transport the liquid as checked luggage — which would have delayed him — or give the liquids to a family member outside the screening area to be taken on a later flight, she said. The man chose the latter option, Tabunar said, but then he proceeded through the screening area without being rescreened. Although it seemed a simple mistake, airport officials couldn’t take any chances and decided to suspend further international departures and to rescreen passengers.

Yes, the guy should have known the carry-on limit for liquids, but get real -- these rules change all the time, and there are millions of passengers who don't travel every year and aren't up to speed on them, especially elderly ones. I bet this guy carried the same damn can of sesame oil back to Korea a dozen times before w/o a hitch.

Although frequent air travellers might know the whole security drill, it certainly isn't the responsibility of passengers to know, for example, that they have to be re-screened a second time, or if they happen wander through and nobody re-screens them that it's their duty to track down a screener and get themselves officially re-screened. Whether it was a problem of staffing, bad wayfinding or whatever at Vancouver, the problem of passengers wandering through security unscreened is that airport's fault, not that of the 60-yr-old, sesame-oil-smuggling Korean ajosshi. Beyond that, there's no suggestion that this guy "snuck" past the screeners.

I was there earlier this month and had to toss a carry-on bottle of water because it exceeded the mL restriction.

As for sneaking by, I did notice gaps, unused counters where I thought at the time someone could duck past given how busy it was and the position of the personnel at the other counters and entrance/exit areas.

Hearing this story doesn't surprise me. Telling Koreans what the law is will not in itself deter them. It's a cultural thing.

I flew from Seoul to Vancouver with all my "liquids" in my carry-on, no problem. I was ordered to toss all my "liquids"-shaving gel, sunscreen, toothpaste, aftershave-for a 15 minute connecting flight from Vancouver to Victoria. F@#$ was I pissed off.

That was the day I flew out of Van. We sat on the plane at the gate for an hour-and-a-half before being told we had to de-plane get re-screened. (We had been informed that there was some kind of security breach, but no details.) Altogether we were over three hours late leaving.

I'm pretty sure that dude was supposed to be on my plane, too.

Yes, this exposes glaring and disturbing holes in YVR's security. How the Hell did this dude just "open a door" and bypass screening? Were there no sirens - and if there were, did the security people not twig to it?

I'm not a fan of our modern era of heightened security and the culture of fear in which we live, but clearly: Something. Went. Wrong.

Anyway, cocktails were ordered ASAP after liftoff, I can assure you.

Perhaps you'd prefer US airport security and its policy on boxcutters?
