My contract is finished on June 23. My school told me that they would like me to stay until the end of the month. I asked them if they needed to extend me visa with immigration and they told me no, it's ok because it 's only going to be for a few more days. My question: Will I be fined upon leaving the country?

The whole thing seems subject to what the immigration officer ate on a particular day. I know somebody- not a guess or folklore- who was a day late. The person couldn't process a visa the following year. The 10 day grace period is a myth until it's not a myth. It all depends on what the particular officer has eaten on the day you slip through the gate. I also know a few other people who were sent from the air-ticket line to immigration when the ticket clerk saw that their visa/passport was over a day.


You're going to get stories on both sides- 10 days/no days. Quickly take your Korean friend to immigration- show your contract- pay for the extension - make sure it goes a couple days beyond your contract so you can pack- tell immigration you want time to pack. Your owner might be:



1. Unknowing
2. Jealous if it's heard you're not returning and going to another school
3. Lazy
4. Revengeful for whatever spats you had

That translates into I-don't-care-ism about whether or not you're ever let back into the country.

Tell her you have heard of teachers who couldn't get back in and that you want to get an extension- don't just let her call and assure you it's ok. Get it done. I think immigration is still open in the mornings on Saturday. It's Friday now. So, confirm it's open and go. Go, go, go.

You should not have to pay for an extension of only a couple of days. Show them your plane ticket if your contract doesn't say you have to work those days.

Go to your local immigration and tell them that you will be flying out on a given date and ask for an extension. Say you want time to pack and say good bye to friends. Don't tell them that you are going to work as then they will ask for a new contract to be drawn up. Extensions cost so get your boss to give you the money.

Yeah, I agree with Anda. Immigration is known to be quite fickle. What is OK for one branch/officer, is not for another. I'd try and get something from them in writing, something marked on your ARC.

As an aside, my Nigerian buddy overstayed 6 years on his 3-month tourist visa.

He got out intact and didn't pay anything.

It's not tied to the end of your contract. It's the date of the one year anniversary of your entry date stamped on your passport. This anniversary date will also appear on the front of your alien registration card. If you got your visa entry stamp in your country of origin, it will be the same as the end of your contract. If you came here on a tourist visa and then went to Japan for a teaching visa, you may have a few days leeway. If you are going to leave after the date on the front of your alien registration card, you should (will have to) go to immigration with an outbound ticket and plead your case.

The first thing to do is check the date on your card and you may notice that your E-2 expires two,or more weeks after your contract; immigration looks at the date of the E-2 inside the passport and issuses the card which is valid for one year from said visa.
So, depending on when you were sent on your visa ru, you should be fine.
