In the spirit of totally silly 'this' vs 'that' threads I thought I'd give a shot at introducing the most meaningless one of all.
Who had the most interesting homosexual lover, Gertrude Stein (Alice B.) or the Emperor Hadrian (Antinous)?
St. Anthanasius had this to say about Antinous:
Quote: |
"And such a one is the new God Antinous, that was the Emperor Hadrian's minion and the slave of his unlawful pleasure; a wreth, whom that that worshipped in obedience to the Emperor's command, and for fear of his vengeance, knew and confessed to be a man, and not a good or deserving man neither, but a sordid and loathsome instrument of his master's lust. |
Gertrude of course wrote 'The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas', which of course is not about Alice, as everyone knows.
Brits may want to offer a substitute from one of James I or other kings, etc. Americans may want to substitute Clyde W. Tolson, J. Edgar's friend.
So who had the coolest lover?
I'd have to say Gertrude wins the prize. Alice's recipe for brownies can't be beat. |
