Are you a Christian who doesn't feel represented by the religious right? I know the feeling. When the discourse about faith is dominated by political fundamentalists and social conservatives, many others begin to feel as if their religion has been taken away from them.

...

"Sides are being chosen," Tom DeLay recently told his supporters, "and the future of man hangs in the balance! The enemies of virtue may be on the march, but they have not won, and if we put our trust in Christ, they never will." So Christ is a conservative Republican?

Apparently Republicans have the monopoly on God. I was actually told that you can't believe in the Bible and be a democrat (take in to consideration that I'm from the Southeast U.S.) All that southern fried Christianity was a lot of my reason for leaving.

And probably a lot of their reason for wanting you to go.

That article was both boring and very uninsightful. From the articlce:

I mean merely by the term Christianist the view that religious faith is so important that it must also have a precise political agenda. It is the belief that religion dictates politics and that politics should dictate the laws for everyone, Christian and non-Christian alike.

I'd like to know what he is talking about. I've never met or heard of any Christians who think that, "...religion dictates politics and that politics should dictate the laws for everyone, Christian and non-Christian alike."
Are there people trying to get laws passed that would make it illegal for people to covet? to swear? to neglect the Sabbath? to divorce? to worship any other god besides Yahweh? Now that I know what a "Christianist" is, I doubt I'll be on the lookout for them any more than I am for unicorns.

wannago,
Who said "they" wanted me to? If you want to take the attitude love it or leave it, that's fine. Just don't get all huffy because there are some of us sane enough to see through the conservative southern bs.

As Andrew Sullivan has said: What part of "My kingdom is not of this world" don't they get?

They (southern right-wing christian nuts) have been using the "love it or leave it" bull since I can remember. I am grateful for their advice. I am only sorry it took me so long to heed it. Cool
