Use of Traditional Measuring Units to Be Fined
Shops, restaurants and companies that use traditional units of measurements such as pyong and keun from next July will suffer legal sanctions, the government said yesterday.... South Korea had adopted the International System of Units in 1961, encouraging people to switch to meters, kilograms and seconds for measurements. But the metric system hasn't replaced the centuries-old habit of using traditional units such as li (length), pyong (area), and keun and don (weight) in everyday life.

The whole country still thinks in pyeong. Trying to force the nation to suddenly begin computing pyeong to meter or meter to pyeong when dealing with real estate and budongsans is going to be a gong show. And the greedy budongsans, who are sly to begin with, will keep reverting to pyeong to maintain competitiveness considering that citizens don't give a rats ass about metric conversion.

| The ministry is planning to inform the public until June, before it kicks off nationwide inspections in cooperation with local governments. |
With the kajillion number of budongsans out there, I'd reckon that it would take some serious manpower to do spot inspections for this. Maybe no teacher crackdown next summer. |

| I actually quite like the pyeong measurement, the others are useless though. |

As an American, I like the keun (400g), because it's very close to a pound. Of course, that's only true when it's fruits and vegetables. For some reason, a keun of meat is 600g.
Screw it, they may as well just go metric. |

| Hmmm... I use 자/척/尺 (30.3cm), 치/촌/寸 (1/10 of a 자), 푼/분/分 (1/10 of a 치), and 돈 all the time; it's how we measure bows and arrows in Korean trad archery. It's been used for centuries, so I doubt we're about to change. Of course, the distance from the shooting line to the target used to be measured in 보/步 (a pace--120cm), and arrows used to be measured in 량/兩 (37.3g), but aren't any more... |

Yeah, it's high time Koreans started using that newfangled, smarty-pants, time-reckonin' jargon, like "seconds"... and "minutes" and "hours". No more 'I'll be there in two shakes of a lamb's tail' or 'We'll have this palace roof repaired in about 15,900 alligators.
1-alligator, 2-alligator, 3-alligator...'.
seconds... |
