I have a laptop that I need to send to Canada (cheaply, but no rush)

I've heard that the Post Office won't do it? Is this true? Do I have to courier it, and is that expensive?

Any input would be appreciated.

I'm curious about this too, if people don't mind posting here or PM-ing me.

If you want to do this it poses a few problems.

1st problem is getting it home safely and in 1 piece. Surface mail for high-ticket items (like a computer) is unreliable (theft can be a problem).

More expensive methods (Like EMS with insurance) are more reliable but may not be cost effective.

2nd problem is when it gets to Canada. Canada customs will get it and unless you can PROVE that it was purchased in Canada will assess duties (there is no free trade agreement with Korea), customs charges and taxes.

The receiver will have to pay the fees within 30 days or lose the item.

Send it via EMS. I don't know about Canada, but I've had no trouble sending my cameras and laptop back to Oz. Smile

A few years ago I had to send my laptop to Canada so it could be repaired under warranty.

I sent it DHL, and it cost about 90,000 won. I did have to sign a disclaimer that they had no responsibity for the condition it arrived it, which although it stressed me out, it arrived fine. Pack it VERY WELL and label the box in numerous places as FRAGILE.

I taped an envelope to the side with all of the documentation -- receipts from the purchase that clearly showed it had been purchased in Canada, and a letter addressed to Customs and Immigration outlining why it was being shipped home. I clearly labellled the envelope as "Proof of Purchase to be opened when necessary." I faxed copies of these documents to my father, who was the individual the package was addressed to.

It was held up a few days at customs, and it was opened to see for sure that the serial numbers matched the documentation, but it was released to him eventually, in perfect condition - after it had been opened, they repacked it very well.

So does anyone know how I would go about mailing my laptop home with no proof of purchase? I bought it with cash second hand here in Korea from a Canadian.
