I haven't seen anyone else post on Moussaoui's sentencing. I think this was the greatest thing that could have happened. Sorry Zack, no martyrdom for you! I think mandatory life in sentence should await any convicted terrorist. That would be more of a deterent then execution, IMHO.

Mouss sez jury system in U.S. okay

BY JAMES GORDON MEEK
DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU

WASHINGTON - Now that he's been sentenced to spend the rest of his life in solitary, Zacarias Moussaoui claims he lied about being part of 9/11 and asked to withdraw his guilty plea.

Too late, the judge replied.

The mercy shown by the jury in not ordering him executed for 9/11 "extremely surprised" Moussaoui.

"After reviewing the jury verdict and reading how the jurors set aside their emotions and disgust for me and focused on the law and the evidence ... I now see that it is possible that I can receive a fair trial even with Americans as jurors," he wrote in court papers.

"At the time I entered my guilty plea, my understanding of the American legal system was completely flawed," he said.

Moussaoui requested "a new trial to prove my innocence of the Sept. 11 plot."

Moussaoui said he didn't know 9/11 cell leader Mohamed Atta or the other hijackers, and his claim of being part of that mission was "a complete fabrication ... and I never knew anything about their operation."

U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema quickly dashed Moussaoui's hopes by denying his motion.

"Because defendant was sentenced on May 4, 2006, his motion is too late," Brinkema said in her terse order.

He can appeal her decision to a higher court, however.

Interesting who Moussaoui will be sharing the prison with...

Quote:
Zacarias Moussaoui is transported to the federal Supermax prison in Colorado to begin serving a life term for his role in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Fellow inmates include Ted Kaczynski, Ramzi Yousef, Eric Rudolph and Terry Nichols.

"Lex Luthor and the Legion of Doom" come to mind...I think they should transfer Manson, Norriega, and Saddam there and see what happens.

In a way I would agree with your post. Moussaoui by the way convicted himself when he plead guilty. It is not like the jury had to debate it.

I don't think a life sentance is deters these guys - however it does show the world that the US is really quite merciful.

You got Moussawi, Ramzi Yousef, Noriega and the boys together in a cell? The intelligence info from monitoring their conversations must be considerable.

Current state
Sirhan has been routinely eligible for parole, but as of 2006 parole had been denied 13 consecutive times. Currently he is confined at the California State Prison in Corcoran.

Sirhan's attorney Lawrence Teeter died on July 31, 2005 in Mexico.

Sirhan was again refused parole on March 15, 2006. He did not attend the hearing nor did he appoint a new attorney to represent him.

His possible next chance for parole will be in 2011.
