Since I was a late arrival when I started, my public school contract ends a month after the fall semester begins. I'm intending to do another contract, but the public school positions are not looking too good a month after the semester starts, so I'm thinking I'll be a good excuse to spend the winter in Thailand until the next semester rolls around.

A question I have, however, is if I take the time off, I'll need to get my CBC and other papers in order again. Are there proper ways to arrange that while out of the country (U.S.) or would I have to fly all the way back home to get that stuff taken care of? Anyone done this?

My parents did mine for me. They went down to the police station and ordered my background check. Then they sent it off to the state department to have it apostilled.

For transcripts, order them online and have them sent to your parent's house. Then have them send both background and transcripts together.

Other than that I can't help.

*I have heard some states require you, the actual person on the background check, to be there when ordering.

i had my criminal background check done while i was living in thailand. went to u.s. consulate in chiang-mai and they had someone, trained by fbi, fingerprint me and sent off my cbc application to the states. heard you could also get printed by local thai police but wanted to be safe so used the consulate. takes time and money but worth it. have 2 sets of prints made and sent in case each print isn't clear.

I could stay in Thailand forever and get fat on authentic pad thai for the rest of my life. It's too bad that there's so few jobs there that pay a living wage.

No doubt. I just got back from a visit and luckily made friends with some locals that are gonna apartment hunt for me. I'll be living off savings, but even with that budget, it'll be a good winter.

The last thing I wonder, I guess, is the MOE's willingness tosend an E-2 stamped passport back to Thailand instead of America. Seems like they might not be willing to do that, but then again, that might be me being paranoid.

I got all my docs done while living overseas (Australia, though) and had no issues, though it was difficult. The problem was with the background check, though, not the E-2. That was all done via the mail in Australia and was much better than getting the check. I think the whole fingerprint thing is new since I last did it, though. I did have to go to the local police station to get my ID verified so that I could request my own check, and they would not do it for family back home.
