I had a rather infuriating discussion tonight with another foreigner (not a Canadian, if you can believe that) who seemed to welcome with glee the fall of the U.S. She was convinced that within ten years we (I'm American, so "we" in the nationality sense) would be completely bankrupt and economically impotent in the world economy and that China would rise up as the next super-power.

I'm not so much concerned with the economics of the thing. Despite Bush's looting of U.S. tax dollars for the war, I don't see us folding up shop completely and China coming in to fill the void. But, neither here nor there. I'm just curious who else out there wants to see an end to U.S. hegemony. I don't just mean that we stop the meddling with certian countries, but a total collapse of U.S. power, the total devaluation(sp?) of the dollar and basically an end to it all. Not through war or invasion, just through internal pressures etc.

And, if this applies to any of you, and it were to happen, how do you see such an event effecting the world as a whole?

Unfortunately, more than a few on this board would like to see the US cut down to size and weakened. They don't like that there is a hyperpower in the world and cause of that they will side with anyone anywhere who is against the US.

Even worse are the The 9-11 conspiracy theorists spread misinformation and disinformation in order to cause disorder in the US because they want to see the US goverment overthrown.

The far right , the far left and the sicko hybrid of the of the two want to see the the US weakened or destroyed cause they will never get acheive their goals while the US government is functional. They want the US out of the way cause it is in their way.

I don't think that I would actually wish it, but with the current situation of the world and the economic forcasts that have come up recently.....it has all but come to a foregone conclusion....Pax Roma, Rule Britainia, McAmerica.....they all all come to an end at somepoint...it is nothing personal.

People love to resent, hate, and blame the hegemon -- just because it exists.

There is not much more to know about it than that.

Imperial Rome, Imperial Spain, the British Empire, the U.S. as the sole global "superpower." They have all experienced this in their times.

There is not much more to know about it than that.

As far as whether there are extremists on this board who would jump at the chance to overthrow the U.S., they are indeed here. But the U.S. is in no danger of collapsing anytime soon. The U.S. is still at its zenith as a superpower, and its influence is felt all over the world. And, for this most part, this is good for the world.

Look at China's total disregard for humanitarian concerns within its very newly-developing sphere of influence -- and here I refer to the Sudan, where China is that nation's major trading partner and investor.

When people fantasize about the U.S. being replaced as the hegemon, do they know what they are asking for?

What do the Neo Stalinists , Neo Nazis , , the Khomeni lovers , Bathists , and Bin Laden followers all have in common?

A hatred for the United States. Cause the existance of the US makes what they want to acheive impossible.

As for much of the world they don't want the US to be replaced as a hyperpower so much is that they just don't want there to be any hyperpower.

I can sort of understand that but it is when they side with Khomeni followers , Saddam Hussein or the Klan cause they are against the US govt that they become immoral , evil and worthy of contempt.

I always thought the Soviets wanted to be the hyperpower and more.

With all due respect , the US would not care about regime change if those the the US was fighting with just gave up their war.

If Iran or North Korea tomorrow decided to not be aggressive -then the US would leave them alone.

Quaddafi gave up his war for the most part and now the US doesn't bother him.

The US wants regime change cause the regimes are aggressive, not to force them to accept capitalism or US values. Or to get a better deal for US companies. Maybe 50 uears ago or more that might have been US policy , but now it is simply to force others to give up their war.

I would argue that overwhelmingly capitalism and imperialism are the causes of most forms of current anti-US sentiment. Capitalism on the basis that the majority of the world live in poverty because global wealth is not distributed fairly and imperialism because of the dangerous foreign policies of the US.

In the modern sense, I feel it is now increasingly becoming a question of demographics rather than purely ideology:

60% of the global population is Asian.
Three-fifths of the population live in the third world.
A quarter of the global population is Muslim.

These changes will mean, over time, that the US regime will (correctly) decline in both influence and relevance in relation to the rest of the world.

The US has long experience at being the leading superpower. A newbie taking over the reigns would not be so responsible at being world leader.
better the devil you know. The EU, China or Russia could never properly rise to the challenge.

For 50 years the US has encouraged the formation of some kind of European union. For 30 years it has been encouraging investment in and development of China. There are not a lot of other hegemons in history who have encouraged the growth of rivals.

I am no fan of capitalism by the way , it is a terrible system but it is the least bad system.

Communist countries - were poor .and the greatest polluters in history.

dangerous foreign policies just tell the Bathists , Khomeni lovers and Bin Laden guys to give up their war. By the way they would kill you too cause you are a communist.

Perhaps, the US isn't perfect but the US is better than its enemies and it is better that the US get what it wants than them getting what they want.

If they get what they want then it is not correct. And when people side them cause they are against the US then they are immoral and worthy of comtempt

Anyway the Soviet Union is gone. But I am sure you could get a job in North Korea.

By the way you once said that you support those who are against the US cause you want to see an end to global capitalism.
Well the Klan is against the US - would you form a alliance with them? I mean Stalin formed an alliance with Hitler.

Just curious.

OP, you should have slapped her upside her head and poured beer on her just for being a moron.

Joo,

dude, relax. Its good that people hate your country. It would be scary if people didnt hate it. Who hate Romania or Luxembourg? Nobody because they dont really matter. Just accept that people will hate your country and that its a sign that your country is powerful. And dude, chill out.

No. I don't accept the argument that Islam and Communism are opposed to each other. Many elements of Qadaffi and Ahmadinejad's policies are communistic in tone, if not in practice. There is further commonality in my (and their) universal opposition to multi-party systems, increasing state control and eliminating market forces.

I'm sure you know my position on Stalin then. Whilst I would not oppose any group that is working to abolish the current capitalist state, I would regard a sect like "the Klan" as having no role to play in a genuine communist society, where questions (such as race and equality) would have already been resolved.
