I don't know what happened my computer, but for some reason now, I cannot read Korean characters on my screen. They just turn out as garbly-gook.. something like this:
츮 ɽѵ ѱ ?
A series of upside down question marks, 1/2 signs, vowels with all sorts of odd European accents... The odd thing is, I can perfectly read actual Korean webpages. Dave's ESL cafe is the ONLY site where the Korean isn't showing up.
What can I do to fix this, and be able to once again read the Korean on Dave's ESL cafe? My Korean gf I think did something to it, but she doesn't remember doing anything to change the language settings... I've played around with them, but no success. |

When you come across a page like that, check the encoding settings:
For IE it's the "view" pull-down menu, followed by the "encoding" menu. Try choosing a different one (a Korean one if it's currently on Western or Unicode).
For Firefox it's "view" and then character encoding. Same thing as IE, or you might try turning the auto-detect on. |

I've been getting the same thing, Brento, but only very recently (since the phpBB: critical error was fixed? probably coincidental) and never before. And yes, only on Dave's. Using Safari browser (mac). Changing the text encoding is simple, but I wonder what's causing it suddenly. |

I can't say what's wrong or how to fix it, but you guys (sans Guru) should post what browsers you are using- whoever can help you will probably need to know that. |

Okay, just had the problem again, and this time it wasn't resolved by switching the text encoding. I've not played with my system preferences recently enough that I could have triggered the problem, and none of the standard updates I've made affect encoding or browser capabilities at all.
It goes like this. (I think.) I'll type something in Hangul, hit Preview -- it's in Hangul. Good. Then I'll switch language back to English, type the rest of my post in English, hit Preview or Submit -- I get question-marks ("??-??? and ????") instead of Hangul. Not computer gibberish, but question-marks. And when the question-marks appear, forget it -- no amount of fiddling with text encoding will ever get them to appear in Hangul again.
Not fun. Nowhere near the hassle of phpBB: critical error, but still not fun. |

The question marks basically mean that the encoding that you are using doesn't recognize the code point of the characters you have downloaded.
So basically, daves uses euc-kr charset. This allows you to view both korean and english characters (afaik). So like you said, you can type korean and it comes out fine just like it should.
Now when you switch to English, your encoding changes for some reason. Either automatically by your program (whatever program that is I'm not sure), or else you have your browser set to override the encoding that is fed to it by dave's server.
Set your browser to automatic, don't forcefully view anything in english encoding. You should only use your switch browser encoding function as a last resort. It's up to the computer programmer to tell your browser what encoding to view his text in. |
