|
|
So I saw this article on tomshardware.com today and I figured some of the hardcore gamers who inhabit daves might be interested ...
Apparently you can overclock a 64bit dual-core Pentium D 805 stabily at 4.1 GHz. ...
From the article
Quote: |
The Pentium D 805 is a budget CPU, but it puts lots of processors from AMD and Intel to shame. Although it is not based on the latest 65 nm core, this CPU remains stable even when operating at amazing 4.1 GHz. The Pentium D 805 ascends to the throne as the new King of overclocking, knocking out the AMD Opteron 144.
|
... so for like $130, you can get a cpu which outperforms some of the top processors out there. Which should leave you with enough cash to splash out on ram, graphics cards and water coolers etc ... I guess ...

130.00 Bucks?
Did you read the fineprint?!
The motherboards they used were all 200.00 +
The ram was also pretty top end stuff.
And how about the water cooling? Another 200.00 + |

Even with all that factored in it's still cheaper then the Pentium Extreme Ed. cpu (that runs about a grand plus add memory/motherboard). |

Not really...you still gotta factor in a 500+W PSU, and DDR2-800 memory....and were still not even considering the power consumption. What was it? I think 260W at idle and 475W full load! Talk about an electricity bill! I don't really think its economical considering they didn't try OCing the high end chips, but still quite an overclock!
The Q3 chips are gonna blow these all out of the water anyways. I'm gonna wait. |

I'm content with my 2.4 Pentium 4 overclocked to 3.2 (with 1 gig of RAM). Only takes a few seconds to boot and still has no trouble running whatever I've thrown at it with the virus software and firewall running still on. |

Hey hollywoodaction. I've got the same setup. I've only got my 2.4C OCed to 3.0, though. I've got a Gig of ram, but its Samsung 3200 and I think its slowing me down. Every time I go above 3.0 I get an error that my "timings are too tight". The 2.4Cs are one of the greatest overclockers though!
Well...save for the one this thread is talking about...Wow! |

Asus motherboard. You need to flash your bios with the latest upgrades. |

The cost difference between those and lesser units isn't all that big. DDR2-800 512MB can be found for around the same price as DDR2-667 which is about $10 more on average than DDR2-533. 500W+ power supplies can be found in the 50,000 Won range.

Computers run internally on DC power which is not a 1:1 ratio with the AC power you get out of the wall but rather substantionally less. End of the day, you might pay an extra dollar or two per month.

If one is always willing to wait at least six months for faster options, it will be a never ending wait as faster units are always arriving. |

I'm more worried about my lack of a PCI graphics card than I am about my 2.4 Ghz clock speed. So you can overclock a cpu to 4 Ghz- so what? Assuming you can afford the electricity, etc. what does a 4Ghz cpu really do for you anyway?
Or am I missing something? |

True...CPU speed ain't really that important these days. Even the most demanding games only required a middle-range cpu.
It's all about that dang graphics card. They are suckingly expensive and the card companies and game companies are really burning people these days. We gotta overclock those things. I bought a 6600GE (Gamers Edition) and it had DDR2 (really). I was able to OC it to a 6600GT with no problems and I saved a ton of cash. Soon as I did that though, the f*&(ers went through another growth spurt and the 6600gt was out of the runnings. I hate card companies (sorry for the rant). |

Stop looking at the numbers and start looking at the game. These folks have you believing that you need to play at 1600x1200, 8xAA and 16xAF just to have fun playing.
Apparently some people believe that.
Heck, I gave up on the coputer gaming thing when the XBOX 360 stats came out. It just doesn't make sense to game on a PC anymore. At least, if you buy into all the brainwashing. Yes, I am a convert. I railed against consoles for a long time, but I see the light now.
I still have my 9800PRO XT 256 and play FEAR at 1027x768 with 2xAA and it looks fine. It was fun, the most important thing. Quake 4, Doom 3...all ran fine, albeit at a lower res, but it was still fun and looked good. |

The time has ended for computer gaming if Demo has converted to consoles! !
Demo, have you actually bought an Xbox 360 already, or is it still on your list? I kind of envy you. I was going to wait for the PS3, but now with a baby on the way, I have to sideline my materialism. Maybe I'll be able to get a PS3 in ten years or so as an entertainment option for my kids at that time! |

Still waiting Jaz. Unfortunately, to really enjoy console gaming, one needs a pretty good TV. I really don't watch much TV, so I can't be bothered right now...it's on the list though.
The 360 is very powerful, as will be the other consoles. I think the 360 will have the largest selection of titles, so I will go with that.
Anyways, these days I haven't any time at all for gaming. |
